Overview

Rail and Transit Advisory is a multidisciplinary transport advisory discipline that helps clients make evidence-based decisions about the development, funding, delivery and improvement of rail and transit schemes. Our work typically sits at the early stages of project development, where strategic thinking, robust analysis and clear communication are required to help clients define their objectives, understand options and build the case for investment.

The discipline combines quantitative analysis with a strong understanding of policy, operations, commercial drivers and passenger or user outcomes. Successful team members are therefore able to work with data and technical evidence, while also understanding how analysis supports wider strategic, financial, operational and client decision-making. Our outputs range from Green Book compliant business cases through to client reports, briefing papers, presentations and decision-support material for senior stakeholders including detailed spreadsheet models and technical analysis.

We are looking for a Transport Consultant to support project delivery and bidding.

Your Role

You will be part of our multidisciplinary teams focused on delivering high-quality outputs for our clients.

You will work as part of our dynamic and integrated team, and autonomously when required.

You will prepare technical analysis supporting the teams project development (e.g. demand forecasting, operating cost development, economic appraisal, multi-criterial analysis).

You will prepare reports and presentations for a range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will interface directly with clients to manage and nurture long lasting relationships.

You will contribute to business development and bid writing.

You will provide project management support to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery to our clients.

You will be empowered and supported to continually develop yourself and those around you.

About you

A degree or equivalent qualification in transport planning, or a related subject such as economics, mathematics, physics or geography.

Experience and in-depth understanding of the transportation industry, preferably across multiple modes.

Strong numeracy and analytical skills, with experience using Microsoft Excel to structure data, undertake calculations and present results clearly.

Ability to interpret data, identify trends and explain the implications of analysis in plain English.

Excellent communication skills with strong report writing capability, with the ability to prepare and present information to a range of audiences.

Ability to manage and quality assure own work, including checking calculations, version control, documenting assumptions and keeping clear audit trails.

A proven track record of delivering high-quality analysis to tight deadlines.

Experience working in a collaborative environment combined with the drive and ability to work independently.

Experience in client and stakeholder management and the confidence to build your own networks.

The role does not require the candidate to be an established rail specialist, but they should be able to demonstrate strong analytical foundations and an interest in applying these skills to rail and transit advisory work.

The following would be desirable but are not essential:

  • An understanding of transport planning, economics, geography, engineering, public policy, finance, data analytics or a related discipline.

  • Awareness of rail and public transport issues, including the role of rail and transit in supporting economic growth, decarbonisation, connectivity, regeneration and social outcomes.

  • Familiarity with business case or appraisal principles.

  • Experience with data visualisation, GIS, coding, or transport modelling.
