Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely. We are transforming the legal experience for all by bettering the lives of legal professionals while increasing access to justice.

As a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll sit at the intersection of engineering and client impact, the person who turns the legal industry’s most complex challenges into working software. You'll embed with our most demanding clients, move from prototype to production quickly, and feed what you learn back into our platform and roadmap. This isn't a support role or a solutions role with some coding on the side. You'll design and build end-to-end, work directly with client technical teams, and ship code that real lawyers rely on. The best ideas you surface in the field will graduate into product features for all of Clio's users. This role involves occasional travel to client sites to foster strong relationships and provide hands-on support.

What You’ll Work On

  • Embed with enterprise clients to map out workflows, define clear success metrics, and de-risk constraints before writing a line of code.
  • Design, prototype, and productionize custom AI workflows.
  • Build and maintain integrations that slot into complex client environments using Clio APIs and the broader modern stack.
  • Work directly with client technical teams to troubleshoot, debug, and optimize deployments in real-time.
  • Translate experimental R&D into stable, production-grade code — the kind that eventually becomes a platform feature for every Clio user.
  • Surface recurring patterns from the field that sharpen our product roadmap and inform how we build.

How You Operate

The technical bar for this role is high. But the thing that will make you exceptional is how you work, not just what you know. You fix root causes, not symptoms. When something breaks in a client environment, you're not satisfied with a workaround. You dig until you understand why, and you bring that back to the team. You know when to move fast and when to slow down. You can build a scrappy PoC to prove an idea in a day, and you know exactly when it's time to harden that code for the long term. You don't confuse the two. You're as comfortable in a client conversation as you are in a code review. You can explain technical trade-offs to a non-technical stakeholder and earn their trust — then turn around and ship. You operate well in ambiguity. Not every problem comes with a spec. You're energized by open-ended, high-leveraged challenges, and you know how to define the problem before you solve it.

Qualifications

  • Strong full-stack fundamentals and deep comfort with RESTful APIs and systems integrations.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, build and deploy production applications.
  • Hands-on experience building LLM-powered applications — retrieval, agents, structured outputs, prompt safety — and taking them through to production.
  • Experience working directly with clients or customers: scoping ambiguous problems, communicating trade-offs, and iterating based on real-world feedback.
  • A genuine curiosity about AI and how it applies to the legal industry. You're not just using AI tools, you're thinking about how they change what's possible.
