Job Description
ROLE OVERVIEW //
We are recruiting for an Environment Manager to support the development and delivery of Slaughter and May’s environment strategy. The Environment Manager will focus on carbon reporting, data analysis and improving overall environmental performance. The role requires strong analytical, communication and project management skills to drive measurable environmental impact.
The Environment Manager will measure and manage Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions reporting, develop KPIs and targets, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations
The role reports to the Senior Environmental Sustainability Manager. The Environment team is embedded within our Facilities and Operations department, and they work hand in hand with experts across the department and the firm including the Responsible Business team. There is significant collaboration between the Environment team and internal and external stakeholders to embed sustainability across all operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES //
The key responsibilities of this role are set out below and there may be others which are not listed. You may be required on occasion to work outside our normal working hours of 9:30am to 5:30pm.
Strategy, targets and Net Zero planning
- Develop and implement the firm’s Net Zero Transition Plan, including upstream and downstream Scope 3 emissions, aligned with SBTi.
- Support rebaselining of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
- Develop and maintain environmental targets and KPIs in collaboration with the Senior Environmental Sustainability Manager and relevant stakeholders.
- Track performance against targets.
Data analysis, accreditation and reporting
- Lead the collation, calculation, analysis and reporting of environmental and energy performance data (e.g., travel, waste and water), including carbon emissions.
- Support ISO14001/50001 audits and environmental management systems.
- Research, identify and implement tools to improve data management and reporting processes.
- Produce quarterly and annual reports for internal and external stakeholders and provide insights and recommendations for improvement.
- Lead the annual carbon footprint verification and ESOS submission.
- Provide data and insights for client questionnaires, sustainability reports and disclosures (e.g. UNGC, CDP, Ecovadis, RE100, FSQS).
- Maintain the environmental initiatives tracker, dashboards and reporting tools including quantifying savings for compliance and reporting.
- Stay updated on evolving legislation.
Process
- Develop and improve internal procedures to streamline environmental data collection and reporting.
- Identify and propose initiatives to reduce environmental and energy impacts using data insights.
- Support procurement processes to reduce environmental risks across the value chain, including Scope 3 emissions.
Stakeholder engagement
- Build and develop relationships with key stakeholders.
- Respond to internal and external queries on environmental performance.
- Collaborate with service providers and internal teams to recommend and deliver environmental improvements.
- Lead and participate in working groups to drive sustainability initiatives.
Communication and training
- Develop and deliver effective environmental communications and training material for internal stakeholders, as required.
- Clearly communicate performance metrics and sustainability goals to stakeholders.
- Promote sustainability best practices across the firm.
Planning, organisation and teamwork
- Plan and manage workload to meet objectives and deadlines.
- Collaborate with the environmental team and wider business services.
- Provide cover during team absences and contribute to team development.
- Participate in ad hoc projects and continuous improvement efforts.
Governance
- Support the Environmental Steering Group, Responsible Business Committee and internal networks.
- Manage supplier contracts and procurement processes in line with firm policies.
- Drive delivery of environmental initiatives and foster a culture of sustainability.
CANDIDATE PROFILE //
Candidates for this position must have:
- 5+ years’ experience in environmental and energy performance.
- Proven experience in carbon accounting (Scope 1, 2, and 3), target setting, and data analysis.
- Familiarity with UK environmental legislation and reporting frameworks (SECR, ESOS, IFRS).
- Experience with environmental disclosures and verification processes (e.g. GHG Protocol, ISO14064, CDP, UNGC).
- Strong understanding of climate change issues and sustainability best practices.
- Experience advising stakeholders and implementing environmental management systems.
- A confident, proactive problem-solver, prepared to take a hands-on approach to managing their workload using their own initiative.
- A willingness to provide feedback, share information and contribute ideas and suggestions as necessary.
- Excellent communication skills. Ability to express views clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles.
- Excellent attention to detail.
Qualifications:
- Degree (or equivalent) in sustainability, energy, environmental management, or a related field.
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. IEMA/ISEP, EMA).
