An established and highly respected Building Services Contractor is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing Design Management team in Central London. This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanically biased Building Services professional who enjoys coordinating, reviewing and managing design rather than undertaking detailed hands‑on design calculations and production work.

Working closely with the Design Director and an experienced team, you will play a key role in managing mechanical design development through the detailed design and construction phases of a diverse portfolio of projects. The business delivers technically challenging schemes across the commercial, hospitality, residential, sports and public sectors, including major refurbishments, decarbonisation programmes, stadium upgrades and high‑end residential developments.

The Role

  • Manage and coordinate mechanical design activities from RIBA Stages 3-5
  • Liaise with external MEP design consultants and specialist subcontractors
  • Review design information for technical compliance, coordination and buildability
  • Support tender submissions, bid preparation and pre‑construction activities
  • Attend and lead design coordination meetings and workshops
  • Work closely with project delivery, procurement and commercial teams
  • Identify design risks and develop practical engineering solutions
  • Ensure designs meet project, client and regulatory requirements
  • Drive design programmes to ensure information is delivered on time
  • Assist in value engineering and design optimisation exercises

Requirements

  • Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering
  • Experience within a Building Services Consultancy, Main Contractor or MEP Contractor environment
  • Strong understanding of mechanical building services systems
  • Experience coordinating, reviewing or managing design information
  • Good understanding of design management and project delivery processes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with consultants, clients and internal teams
  • Commercial awareness and understanding of construction delivery programmes
  • Previous involvement in tendering, pre‑construction or design management activities would be advantageous
