Job Purpose
To deliver engaging, practical mechanics instruction to students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), supporting their technical skill development, confidence, independence, and employability in a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver differentiated mechanics lessons (e.g., basic vehicle maintenance, tools, diagnostics) tailored to individual learning needs and abilities.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to support a range of SEN, including learning difficulties, autism, ADHD, and physical disabilities.
  • Provide hands-on training in a workshop setting, ensuring all activities are accessible and inclusive.
  • Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or contribute to EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plans) targets.
  • Monitor, assess, and record student progress, providing regular feedback to students, parents, and staff.
  • Promote safe working practices and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in the workshop.
  • Support students in developing employability skills, including teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Manage classroom and workshop behaviour using positive behaviour support strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists, and other professionals.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and workshop resources in good working order.
  • Support students’ personal development, confidence, and emotional wellbeing.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Relevant qualification in mechanics (e.g., NVQ/City & Guilds in Motor Vehicle Maintenance or similar).
  • Teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, Level 3/4 Award in Education & Training) or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience working with SEN learners or in inclusive education settings.
  • Strong practical knowledge of vehicle systems and workshop practices.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt to varied learning needs.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a special school, alternative provision, or further education setting.
  • Knowledge of EHCP processes and SEN strategies.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Behaviour management training (e.g., Team Teach).
