Job Overview
I have cerebral palsy and therefore use a wheelchair full-time as I am unable to walk. However, I am able to manage my wheelchair independently around the house. The main things I will need assistance with are:
- Assistance with personal care (pre- and post-showering)
- Picking clothes and getting dressed for the day
- Meal preparation, usually just breakfast and lunch
- Occasional other personal care assistance e.g. cutting fingernails
- Occasional cleaning of my bedroom
- Travelling to appointments and meetings (you will have access to my own car)
- Occasional other trips e.g. church or theatre, this will always be planned in advance
About Me
I have many hobbies, but would say the main driving force in my life is music. You will often hear me playing/composing on my piano, or more often than not, singing music (especially musical theatre). I also volunteer with a local charity called Art Beyond Belief several times per week. These meetings are sometimes on Zoom, and sometimes in person, for which I will require help travelling to. I have many other passions, which include music technology, synthesisers, aircraft, retro and modern gaming, as well as reading various audiobooks, especially science fiction. I also like to work out several times per week, going to a local park and pushing myself round. On the weekend I also enjoy going out to visit local towns, to see friends, eat out at restaurants, and attend church events sometimes. Please note that I do often like to be independent and there may be some days where I will not be going out anywhere and may require less direct assistance from yourself. In these cases hopefully you will be fine occupying yourself, I have a spare room designated for my PAs which has a sofa and TV in it for you to sit.
Your Responsibilities
I will need help with during your workday, such as prepare my breakfast and lunch on most days, although these are generally simple meals and do not require extensive cooking ability. I am able to shower independently, so do not need direct assistance here, but will need help with picking clothes for the day and getting dressed after showering. You will also be required to help transport me in my personal vehicle, whether this is for meetings with friends, trips out to exercise, and church or other group events. There will also be other tasks on an as-needed basis, which may include cutting nails, cleaning and tidying of my bedroom, changing of bed linen, organising personal items.
What I Need From You
I need someone with whom I can have long conversations. I love to talk, and although there is no need for us to have the same interests, we do need to be compatible in this way. I also need you to be somewhat more laid-back in certain situations. I can get quite stressed quite quickly, and I’ve found that personality trait helps. I need someone, who is organised, as I can often overlook critical details and can be pretty forgetful at times. You need to have a full clean driving licence and be comfortable driving in London occasionally if, for example, I would like to see a musical in the west end. I live with my parents, so it is vital you get on with them and be respectful or being within the family home.
About You
Care experience is not required as full training in client’s particular needs is provided. You will need to be physically fit, calm, patient and caring. Good organisational skills and being able to work on your own initiative. Have a good sense of humour. You will need to be a non-smoker. You must have a mature and responsible attitude and have the ability to be assertive if the situation calls for it. You must hold a full clean UK driving licence and be comfortable driving into London, often at peak times. Be clean and tidy in both your appearance and ways. You will be fully trained prior to starting, so previous experience of this type of work is not required. You must be able to respect our client’s privacy and have an understanding of the need for confidentiality in all areas of your work. This also includes respect for the boundaries as you will be interacting with the client’s family on a consistent basis.
Application Process
To apply, please submit a cover letter describing your interests and explaining why you would be a suitable candidate for this unique and rewarding position.
