We are recruiting for the latest member of our Home Lending Team in the role of a Mortgage Underwriter. We’re looking for someone who’s comfortable in making decisions who has a customer obsessed mindset and shares the aspiration to make our customer’s home-owning dreams a reality.

For most people, taking out a mortgage is one of life’s biggest milestones. For us, it’s about keeping the customers best interests at heart when we’re determining whether to lend. That’s where you come in.

Who Are We? Not just another building society. Not just another job. We’re the fourth biggest building society in the UK and what makes us a bit different is that we’re a mutual organisation. We don’t have shareholders; we’re owned by our members. Our colleagues say Skipton’s a great place to work, and you could be one of them, bringing with you new ideas on how we can keep customers at the heart of what we do. Whatever your background, and whatever your goals, we’ll help you take the next step towards a better future.

You will be joining the Home Lending team of around 120 people, broken down into 8 teams made up of Underwriters and Mortgage Administrators. We work closely with several teams across the Homes Function including the Homes Direct, Mortgage Advisers and Business Development Managers. You’ll be assessing applications on whether we lend, ensuring this is in the best interest of the customer and the Society, and will be expected to keep our brokers and advisors up to date with the progress of the applications. The applications will be varied and interesting and we’ll make sure you’re fully trained to deal with anything that comes your way.

What’s In It For You? Skipton values work/life balance and we are proud to support hybrid and flexible working, where possible. We have a newly refurbished head office which offers a vibrant and collaborative working space. We have a range of other benefits available to you including:

  • Annual discretionary bonus scheme
  • 25 days standard annual leave + bank holidays + rising 1 day per year of service to a maximum of 30 days
  • Holiday trading scheme allowing the ability to buy and sell additional annual leave days
  • Matching employer pension contribution (up to 10% per annum)
  • Colleague mortgage (conditions apply)
  • Salary sacrifice scheme for hybrid & electric car
  • A commitment to training and development
  • Private medical insurance for all our colleagues
  • 3 paid volunteering days per annum
  • Diverse and inclusive colleague networks available for you to join including our Carers and Pride Alliance groups
  • We care about your health and wellbeing – we provide a range of benefits that support this including cycle to work initiative and discounted gym membership

What Will You Be Doing? Assessing applications and weighing them up against our lending policy and risk model to make sure they meet our criteria. Responsible for all underwriting queries, resolution, and decisions in principle for new cases. Ensure all correspondence including references and valuations are in line with lending policy and the appropriate mortgage product. Managing a pipeline of cases proactively and efficiently to ensure cases are progressing from application to offer in a timely manner. Gathering and discussing outstanding information and documentation from the Customer, Broker or Mortgage Adviser.

What Do We Need From You? It’s great when you can say yes, but sometimes you’ll have to turn people down when they apply for a mortgage, you must be comfortable to do this. Clear and articulate in your communication to all involved, being able to adapt your communication style to different circumstances. Our customers are at the heart of everything we do at Skipton, so you’ll need a genuine respect for people and service skills our customers will love. You’ll also be a key contributor in a team that’s growing and evolving, so if you’re one of those people who embraces change, we’d love to have you on board. You will be an ambassador for the Mortgage Lending team, contributing to the overall performance of the whole department whilst being happy to accept and provide feedback in a constructive manner. As you develop within the role you will be at the forefront of improving our processes to make the customer journey as good as it can be.
