We are currently recruiting for experienced NG Authorised Electricians/Wiremen to support a major substation project in Melksham, Wiltshire. This is an excellent opportunity to join a specialist team delivering critical electrical installation and maintenance works within a high-voltage environment. The successful candidates will have previous experience working on National Grid projects and must hold valid NG Persons authorisation and Manual Handling certification.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out electrical fitting activities on high-voltage switchgear, transformers, and associated equipment.
- Install control and protection systems in accordance with project specifications and industry standards.
- Install and maintain earthing systems across the substation infrastructure.
- Install outdoor equipment including busbars, disconnectors, and switchgear.
- Undertake planned maintenance activities on high-voltage assets and equipment.
- Perform fault-finding and diagnostic work on both low-voltage and high-voltage systems.
- Receive, review, and work in accordance with high-voltage documentation and procedures.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with National Grid standards and site-specific requirements.
- Maintain high standards of health, safety, and environmental performance at all times.
Essential Requirements
- Valid National Grid Persons (NG Persons) authorisation.
- Current Manual Handling certification.
- Previous experience working as an Electrician or Wireman within high-voltage substation environments.
- Proven experience with switchgear, transformers, control and protection systems, and associated electrical equipment.
- Strong understanding of HV safety procedures, permits, and documentation.
- Ability to interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
- Excellent fault-finding and diagnostic skills across LV and HV systems.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience on National Grid transmission projects.
- Experience installing and commissioning protection and control systems.
- Knowledge of substation construction and maintenance activities.
- Additional electrical certifications relevant to utilities or infrastructure projects.
Important Information
This is a minimum 5-month contract with an immediate start available. The role involves working 45 hours per week at a rate of £32.00 per hour. Only candidates with valid NG Persons authorisation and Manual Handling certification will be considered. Previous substation and high-voltage experience is essential.
