About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of complex construction projects with a particular focus on Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Department for Education (DfE) funded schemes, with a national Tier 1 contractor. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record working with Tier One contractors, overseeing projects from pre‑construction through to handover, ensuring successful delivery on programme, budget, safety, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end delivery of construction projects ranging from £5m–£50m+ within the education sector.
- Manage design development, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, local authorities, DfE representatives, and stakeholder groups.
- Ensure compliance with DfE guidance, standards, and procurement frameworks.
- Programme planning: develop, monitor, and update project schedules.
- Financial management: oversee budgets, forecasts, variations, and cost reporting.
- Lead and coordinate site teams, subcontractors, and design consultants.
- Drive a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with CDM regulations and internal H&S policies.
- Oversee quality assurance, risk management, and performance monitoring.
- Prepare and present progress reports to senior management and project stakeholders.
- Ensure projects meet the specific functional and accessibility requirements associated with SEN educational facilities.
Required Skills & Experience
- Degree-qualified in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
- Proven experience delivering construction projects in a Tier One contracting environment.
- Demonstrable experience working on SEN schools, mainstream education facilities, or DfE capital programmes.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent understanding of construction methodologies, procurement routes, and project controls.
- Strong commercial awareness and ability to manage budgets and contractual obligations.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and client-facing skills.
- Proficient in project management software (e.g., Asta Powerproject, MS Project).
- Strong commitment to health, safety, sustainability, and quality standards.
- Professional membership (MCIOB, MAPM, RICS, or similar).
- Experience delivering projects within DfE Frameworks (e.g., MMC, CF21).
- Knowledge of SEN-specific building requirements and safeguarding standards.
- Experience with modern methods of construction (MMC) or offsite solutions.
