SSS Gears Ltd. is a private mechanical engineering company with over 70 years of history and experience in the manufacture of mechanical clutches. We design, manufacture, assemble and test mechanical clutches which are widely used in various industrial fields throughout the world, including Power Generation, Energy Reclamation, Marine systems, and Petrochemical. All products are designed, assembled, and tested at our facility in Sunbury-on-Thames, London. Manufacturing of large components is carried out at our site based in Tamworth, and we also use local subcontract engineering companies to manufacture smaller clutches and components, ensuring all components are manufactured in the UK.
As the apprentice, you will have the opportunity to receive on-the-job training and work towards your qualifications with Kingston College. You will be fully involved in the engineering industry, where there is a need to follow drawings, solve problems, and work as a team to complete any manufactured product. Due to an unprecedented order intake, we have vacancies for two Apprentice Fitter - Technicians within our company. This is a long-term career opportunity where you will become an integral part of the team, learning from experienced technicians how to build and test clutches, and understanding operating systems regarding quality and documentation control of all clutches and other components that come through the workshop.
This is an exciting opportunity to become a member of a high calibre team involved in the inspection, assembly, and testing of a wide variety of both small and large rotating units. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who have ambition, want to make a career, and become successful mechanical engineers in maintenance diagnostics, mechatronics, and tool making, while gaining experience in the technical assembly of complex components.
This is a very active and varied role requiring an energetic person with common sense and the ability to carry out a variety of duties:
- How to read technical drawings.
- Follow issued build instructions – written and verbal.
- Record in a clear and concise manner build data of components and testing results.
- The use of hand tools and willingness to learn how to use these tools correctly for building and fine finishing of components.
- Training in the use of measurement equipment ranging from Verniers, Micrometres, Dial Test Indicators, and other specialist gauging equipment.
- Understanding Health and Safety requirements.
You will be a team player who can work well in a team as well as independently. You will be able to plan your time effectively and meet tight deadlines on issued work.
Entry requirements: 5 GCSEs A*-C/9-4 to include maths and English or equivalent.
Skills required: Analytical skills, Logical thinking.
Training to be provided: You will attend Kingston College for off-the-job training working towards Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship, alongside qualified and experienced Engineers.
Things to consider: You will need to be able to travel to both Kingston College (KT1) and SSS Gears (TW16). Completion of the Apprenticeship is designed to be recognised by relevant Professional Engineering Institutions at the appropriate level of professional registration (EngTech). A number of our Engineering Apprentices go on to complete the HNC and HND offered at Kingston College.
