Science Operations Software Engineer – Front‑End
The SKA Observatory seeks a front‑end software engineer to develop and advance the Observational Science Operations (OSO) suite of tools used by scientists and telescope operators to submit proposals and manage their lifecycle.
The role
As a Software Engineer you will collaborate with developers worldwide, reporting to the SKA Observatory Science Operation (OSO) Architect, and contributing to a SCRUM team within our SAFe software development organisation. The role is based at the SKAO Headquarters in Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, UK.
Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties
- Work within the software development teams in the SKA Observation Management and Control Agile Release Train to develop the SKA OSO system.
- Act as a technical expert in the development of the SKA OSO software system, providing guidance and best practices for complex user‑facing web‑based software products.
- Actively participate in the software development activity by writing and reviewing code in critical areas of the project, collaborating with international agile teams across Europe, India, South Africa and Australia during construction and operations.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the OSO Software Architect and senior management.
Mandatory Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Experience developing sophisticated web‑based front‑end software systems, preferably in an agile/iterative environment with continuous integration practices.
- Experience working with stakeholders on the design of user interfaces.
- Strong teamwork skills and a flexible, adaptable attitude suitable for meeting deadlines.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Experience in lean/agile principles, adopting Lean UX practices or willingness to learn them.
- Background in observation planning and execution, preferably with a radio telescope facility or experience at an astronomical observatory.
- Some experience in back‑end software development (e.g., Python) and familiarity with database technologies within full‑stack development.
- Experience with Kubernetes or similar orchestration systems.
- Past experience working in a multicultural, international environment across time zones.
