Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, compassionate, and individualised care to patients recovering from surgery or anaesthesia. The Recovery Nurse ensures patient safety, comfort, and readiness for discharge to the ward or home.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Duties:
  • Monitor and maintain airway, breathing, and circulation of unconscious or semi-conscious patients.
  • Assess and manage pain, administer analgesia, and provide wound care.
  • Identify and respond to post-operative complications.
  • Administer medications and fluids as prescribed.
  • Ensure safe handover of patients to ward staff or discharge team.
  • Teamwork & Supervision:
    • Work collaboratively with anaesthetists, surgeons, and theatre staff.
    • Guide and support junior nurses, student nurses, and support workers.
    • Coordinate care in the absence of senior staff.
  • Documentation & Communication:
    • Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
    • Uphold patient confidentiality and dignity at all times.
  • Flexibility & Support:
    • Work across different areas including wards, pre-assessment clinics, and therapy units as needed.
    • Participate in on-call rotas and night shifts where applicable.

    Skills & Experience Required

    • Essential:
    • Registered Nurse (Adult) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP).
    • 12 months previous experience in NHS (UK) hospitals.
    • Good communication and organisational skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Knowledge of NMC/HCPC codes and clinical governance.
    • Basic IT skills.
    • NHS experience.

    • May involve unsociable hours, night shifts, and on-call duties.
