Sizewell C (SZC) is set to become the UK’s most advanced nuclear power station, delivering 3.2GW of reliable, low-carbon electricity – enough to power 7% of the nation’s demand for the next 60 years. Backed by a robust regulatory framework, extensive government support, and lessons learned from Hinkley Point C, SZC represents an extraordinary opportunity to shape the future of clean energy in the UK.
We’re now recruiting a Head of Civils Works Project Management Office (PMO) – a senior leadership role at the heart of the Civils Works Programme (CWP), delivering a diverse range of packages including enabling works, marine and tunnelling infrastructure, main civils, and permanent roads and networks.
What You’ll Be Leading
- As Head of the Civils Works PMO, you will take charge of a critical programme function – owning, shaping, and continuously enhancing all PMO activity across one of the UK’s most complex infrastructure delivery portfolios.
- Reporting into the Head of Programme Controls and the Civils Works Programme Director, you’ll operate within a high-performing matrix structure, bringing strategic oversight and hands-on leadership to a multi-disciplinary team covering schedule, cost, risk, change, reporting, and digital integration.
This is your opportunity to set the benchmark for how Project Controls should be delivered on a national megaproject.
What You’ll Deliver
- Leadership of the Civils PMO function, embedding an integrated, performance-driven culture
- Implementation of robust programme controls, aligned with SZC’s “Digital by Default” strategy
- Direct management of PMO functional leads and sub-programme Controls Managers
- Strategic partnership with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), including Laing O’Rourke, Balfour Beatty and Bouygues TP
- Accountability for timely, accurate, and insightful performance reporting across cost, risk, schedule and change
- A culture of continuous improvement, innovation and cost-consciousness throughout your team
- Active contribution to the wider SZC project and external stakeholder engagement – from government bodies to industry regulators
What You Bring
- A strong track record of Project Controls leadership on major infrastructure or engineering projects (ideally >ÂŁ4bn)
- Depth of experience across all core PMO functions: cost, schedule, risk, change and performance insight
- Skilled in managing matrixed teams and influencing senior stakeholders across complex delivery environments
- A strategic mindset combined with an action-oriented approach to problem solving and performance
- Familiarity with NEC / FIDIC contracts and best practices in programme assurance
- Ideally, exposure to the nuclear, energy or regulated infrastructure sectors
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent in engineering, construction, business or project management
- Membership or certification from APM, AACE, PMI or similar is highly desirable
- Expertise in Project Controls systems and tools (e.g. Primavera P6, Power BI, ecosystem-level integration)
Why join SZC?
- Play a pivotal role in a once-in-a-generation infrastructure project
- Work alongside global engineering leaders and cutting-edge technology
- Shape and lead best-in-class PMO strategy in a high-impact delivery environment
As a Sizewell C employee, you may wonder why you are contacted by colleagues with an EDF email, or see the EDF logo on portals that you access and/or documentation you receive; this is because we have partnered with EDF for the provision of a number of support services whilst we complete a successful transition out of the EDF group.
It’s not every day you get the opportunity to shape the working culture of what will be one of Europe’s largest construction projects, while also helping Britain to reach its target of Net Zero emissions by 2050. That’s one of the reasons Sizewell C will be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, and you’ll need to be an exceptional professional to reach the high standards this critical infrastructure project demands.
The UK is experiencing a nuclear renaissance and Sizewell C – along with its sister project at Hinkley Point C in Somerset – is powering the change. We’re ramping up at pace as we look ahead to the Financial Investment Decision in early 2025, and the start of construction soon after. With government fully on board and public opinion shifting significantly in favour of nuclear, there’s never been a better time to join our project.
