Your impact

The Nuclear Safety Case Engineer is a key role within the Sizewell C Design Authority, reporting directly to the Safety Case Group Lead. This position offers the opportunity to play a central role in the development and delivery of the project's nuclear safety case strategy. You will lead the development of a range of complex nuclear safety cases, ensuring they are robust, compliant, and aligned with regulatory expectations. This includes ownership and coordination of SZC's top‑level safety case—currently the Pre‑Construction Safety Report (PCSR)—as well as supporting the evolution toward the Pre‑Commissioning Safety Report (PCmSR) in the next phase of the project.

Working collaboratively across engineering, design, and regulatory teams, you will ensure that safety arguments are clearly articulated, evidence‑based, and integrated across all aspects of the plant design and lifecycle.

Principal Accountabilities, Activities and Decisions

  • Own the safety case during the design, construction and commissioning phases, advising the regulator, internal stakeholders and the responsible designer on its adequacy.
  • Lead PCSR and PCmSR section development, including strategy setting, team leadership, and progression through the safety case lifecycle (authoring, peer review, verification, regulatory review and approval).
  • Act as an intelligent customer for the safety case by providing technical oversight across licensing, procurement, manufacture, construction, commissioning and operation phases of the station lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including internal teams, external partners and regulators.
  • Maximise the benefits of replication from Hinkley Point C to Sizewell C.

Knowledge and Skills

We welcome applicants with safety case experience and a wide range of underlying technical backgrounds. We are committed to developing our people and offer comprehensive training and development programmes.

  • Knowledge of safety analyses, design and engineering substantiation, ALARP and/or fault studies
  • Ability to identify issues and develop solutions in the context of nuclear plant construction, commissioning and operation
  • Ability to interpret complex information, set clear action plans, and lead the strategic planning of the safety case
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ideally Degree or equivalent in engineering, science, or mathematics
  • Experience in the nuclear or other highly regulated industries, managing complex systems' safety documentation for regulatory compliance and approval

Desirable

  • Civil engineering background would be advantageous, ideally with experience of major infrastructure or nuclear construction projects.

Behavioural Competences

  • Humility: Recognise the value brought from different cultures and experiences. Be open to other's points of view and ideas, be willing to debate and to compromise.
  • Positivity: Positively challenge poor quality and performance. Identify solutions at the lowest possible level. Encourage others to bring new ideas forward.
  • Respect: Value the rules and environment in which we operate. Give and receive feedback with respect. Embrace and engage with new people and ideas.
