Be at the centre of the relationship between Government and one of the UK's most strategically important infrastructure projects.
Sizewell C is one of the largest and most significant infrastructure investments in the UK. The UK is supporting construction as both a shareholder (44.9%) and debt funder (85%). Government therefore has a critical role in supporting delivery of the power station and helping SZC realise wider benefits, including jobs, skills investment, local economic growth and sector leadership.
Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, the HMG Engagement Lead will play a pivotal role in shaping and coordinating Sizewell C's engagement with Government, ensuring that Ministers, departments and wider stakeholders have confidence in the project and understand the role Sizewell C plays in delivering national priorities.
This role sits within the CEO Office and will lead the organisation's Government sponsorship and institutional engagement activity. You will help shape Sizewell C's engagement approach across Government, coordinating activity across the CEO Office including Policy and Public Affairs, our Investor Relations and Finance teams, and other functions to ensure a coherent and effective relationship with Government stakeholders.
Working closely with the Chief of Staff and senior leaders, you will:
- Support ownership of Sizewell C's strategic sponsorship and institutional engagement agenda.
- Develop briefing material and strategic advice for senior executives.
- Coordinate engagement activity across Government departments and key stakeholders.
- Support the organisation's approach to Managing Public Money, Accounting Officer responsibilities and associated Government interfaces.
- Track emerging policy, political and regulatory developments that may impact project delivery.
- Help ensure Government understands how policy can actively support successful delivery of Sizewell C.
- Coordinate complex and sensitive requests across Government, the CEO Office and corporate functions.
- Build trusted relationships across Whitehall and the wider Government sponsorship landscape.
About You
This is not a traditional stakeholder engagement or public affairs role. We are looking for someone who understands how Government works from the inside and who can confidently operate within a complex Whitehall environment. You are likely to bring:
- Experience working within the UK Civil Service, at least Grade 6 or Grade 7 level.
- Experience supporting Government sponsorship, major projects, infrastructure programmes or public accountability arrangements.
- Strong understanding of how policy, delivery and Government priorities interact.
- Experience preparing advice, briefings and recommendations for senior decision-makers.
- Exceptional stakeholder management and influencing skills.
- Strong judgement, political awareness and discretion.
- The ability to navigate complexity, ambiguity and competing priorities.
- Experience working across multiple stakeholders to deliver outcomes in politically sensitive environments.
Particularly attractive backgrounds include:
- DESNZ
- HM Treasury
- Cabinet Office
- Infrastructure and Projects Authority
- Nuclear and energy policy
- Government sponsorship teams
- Complex public-private infrastructure organisations.
Why Join Sizewell C?
This role offers something few Government roles can. You will have the opportunity to move from advising on major infrastructure projects to helping deliver one of the most important projects in the UK. You will gain exposure across Government engagement, policy, public affairs, investor relations, communications and executive decision-making, whilst working on a project that sits at the centre of energy security, economic growth, skills development and national infrastructure delivery.
You will be part of a CEO Office with a broad remit, exceptional visibility and the opportunity to build experience across multiple disciplines whilst helping shape the future of a nationally significant project.
It is a requirement that those who join us have the right to work in the UK. Whilst sponsorship may be a possibility that we can explore, we are fully committed to local recruitment where possible, and those already holding the right to work in the UK. To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting, which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least three of the past five years.
