Project Manager in Bristol

Sizewell C’s business is to design, finance, construct, commission, operate, maintain, and eventually decommission the nuclear power plant and related infrastructure at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Overall, whilst the Company is in the construction phase, the Boards’ principal focus is on the development and construction of Sizewell C on time, on budget and to the highest quality and safety standards. The Company is maturing to meet all these requirements.

Sizewell C is economically regulated by OFGEM under the Regulated Asset Base (RAB) model similar to other UK electricity distribution networks and Thames Tideway. Sizewell C construction strategy is to replicate the design of Hinkley Point C, using the majority of the same supply chain, but innovating in the way it is delivered to achieve savings in time and cost of around 20%. The CCO will need to be guided by and incorporate lessons learned from the Hinkley Point C commercial delivery to achieve Sizewell C’s ambition.

Following Financial Completion and Revenue Commencement, Sizewell C is fully funded and is owned by; The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero representing HM Government, La Caisse, Centrica, EDF and Amber Infrastructure. We are now looking for an experienced Project Manager to take responsibility for equipment contract delivery. You’ll work closely with Suppliers, internal stakeholders, project teams, technical specialists and supply‑chain to apply robust delivery, procurement, governance, and assurance practices. Previous experience of contract delivery in the nuclear industry and familiarity with I&C component procurement would be of particular benefit to this role.

Your Impact

As Project Manager you will drive the delivery of engineering work by the Responsible Designer (RD) and the engineering, procurement and manufacturing of key contracts. As PM your first objective is to sufficiently advance the engineering and secure the supply chain through the maximum possible replication of the HPC detailed design.

As Project Manager you will work closely with the SZC supply chain team, Responsible Designer (RD), the SZC quality team and suppliers to prepare for and execute the delivery phase of the project. Our Project Managers will focus on one of the following areas:

• MEH: primarily the development and setup of the MEH delivery model and alliance for SZC. A joint team has been established, and they will continue to develop and detail the MEH delivery model and alliance, and work in accordance with lessons learned from the HPC programme.
• Nuclear Island (NI): each project manager will be dedicated to a contract(s), and potentially system(s) and building(s) within the NI programme with a value of up to £100m.
• Civil Works: the Project Manager role will support the development of the strategy for delivering scope up to the value of £50m to cost, schedule and quality. This post also has the responsibility to ensure delivery of all (or part of) the engineering, procurement, manufacturing, construction and commissioning activities in accordance with the overall Project schedule.
• CI/BOP: to oversee all activities associated with the delivery of engineering contracts up to the value of £100m and securing resources which meet business and technical requirements, ensuring they’re delivered safely, on time and within budget.

Principal Accountabilities, Activities and Decisions

The role holder will:

• Drive the delivery of the contract or package activities to ensure they are delivered safely, on time, to budget, meeting business & technical requirements.
• Ensure that contract or package contractual requirements are fulfilled.
• Take a global overview of the nuclear power plant Systems, Structures and Components (SSCs) within their programme, with a view to maximise replication from HPC and prepare for key contracts to be awarded.
• Be responsible for the timely delivery of engineering studies by the RD or by key contractors and for ensuring they meet the needs of the SZC project.
• Prepare with the multidisciplinary team specific post‑FID contracts (terms & conditions, contractual appendices and technical specification).
• Drive the implementation of SZC site‑specific design changes into the design deliverables in their programme, including contract specifications to enable robust pricing.
• Manage internal interfaces (between contracts and systems) and external interfaces (between programme scopes) to ensure a coordinated approach to design and delivery.
• Manage early engagement with stakeholders (including equipment suppliers) to identify obsolescence issues and other risks to replication.
• Manage the technical elements of the procurement process for specific contracts.
• Ensure that lessons‑learnt and knowledge‑capture are practiced as business as usual.
• Develop and implement strategies and plans in line with the overall programme execution plan (PEP).
• Define the work scope to be delivered within the contract or package of work and the interfaces to the other elements of the programme.
• Oversee the nuclear power plant systems, structures and components in the Conventional Island and Balance of Plant programme.
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to prepare manufacturing and construction contracts.
• Drive the implementation of SZC site‑specific design changes.

Dimensions

Depending on the area of work:

• In the region of up to 3 direct reports – plus a matrix team of other disciplines forming the project delivery team.
• Interaction with EDF in France and/or with SZC Site Construction Team. The principles of a matrix organisation will still apply.
• Deliver contracts with a value of between up to £50m or up to £100m depending on programme (CW & ME versus NI & CI‑BOP).

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

• Demonstrate success coordinating multi-disciplinary design/procurement work and driving design/procurement teams to deliver on time.
• Project management or project engineering experience, from concept to handover.
• Background in I&C, mechanical, electrical, process, systems or civil engineering for large industrial plants.
• Good understanding of the complexity of major projects, including interface management between scope areas.
• Experience of the pre‑tender and tender stages of procuring contracts for the design, manufacturing and/or installation of industrial equipment.
• Excellent communication skills in client‑facing and contractor‑facing situations.
• Manage engineers, consultants and other advisors throughout large and complex projects.
• Demonstrate specific success in managing / developing:
• Engineering design, contract and field execution strategies for project delivery.
• Multi‑discipline EPCM projects.
• Procurement and management of complex contracts.
• Control of costs; risk; schedule and change and proficient in the use of Earned Value tools.
• Close out of commercial claims and the associated negotiations.
• Previous engineering or project management experience in the nuclear industry.
• Familiarity with I&C component procurement would be of particular benefit to this role.
• Chartered Engineer qualification.
• Direct experience of procuring equipment or installation contracts for nuclear power stations.
