Requirements

  • Experience in full-stack software development within a product or delivery team
  • Experience developing backend services using Python frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or similar
  • Experience building frontend applications using TypeScript and frameworks such as React or Vue
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably AWS
  • Experience with microservices and API-based architectures
  • Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases
  • Strong awareness of secure, scalable, cost-efficient, and maintainable software engineering practices
  • Experience working across backend, frontend, APIs, and cloud infrastructure
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, automated deployment processes, logging, monitoring, and observability
  • Interest in AI-driven validation and rule-based decision logic
  • A degree in a relevant field would be beneficial, but not explicitly required

Responsibilities

  • Building and maintaining scalable, secure, cost-efficient, and maintainable full-stack applications using Python on the backend and TypeScript on the frontend
  • Managing relational and non-relational database systems on AWS
  • Developing responsive and accessible user interfaces using modern front-end frameworks such as React with TypeScript
  • Assisting in implementing CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes
  • Ensuring appropriate logging, monitoring, and basic observability are implemented within the components developed
  • Participating in the development of AI-driven validation and rule-based decision logic under guidance
  • Integrating the Automated Output Checking System across internal and external research platforms
  • Building secure and scalable integrations between access management systems, research analysis platforms, trusted research environments, and supplier-built services
  • Contributing to the design and delivery of a technically challenging, mission-driven system that supports safe research data access

We are UK Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database and research resource containing in-depth genetic and health information from half a million UK participants. We are developing one of the world's first AI-driven automated output checking systems for trusted research environments, using cloud-native technologies to help ensure researchers can safely access and export only approved files. This is a full-stack engineering role within our growing Data & Technology team, working across modern backend, frontend, API, and cloud systems in a hybrid setup with 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, and 2 days onsite. The role is initially based in Stockport, with a planned move to Manchester Science Park in mid to late 2026.
