The ininimowin Language Keeper is an essential role in the Winnipeg School Division, ensuring that Anishinaabemowin is not only taught but lived and shared. Through immersive experiences, peer interaction, and meaningful language use, the Language Keeper will collaborate with the Classroom Teacher to create a dynamic, student-centered environment where ininimowin flourishes.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Classroom Teachers: co-teach ininimowin lessons aligned with classroom teacher plans, model and record language use, and support teachers in integrating the language throughout the school day.
  • Model and Facilitate Language Use: speak exclusively in ininimowin during co-teaching, ensuring meaningful language acquisition for students and teachers.
  • Whole-School Integration: embed ininimowin indoors and outdoors, using natural spaces as a natural language lab. Work with music, physical education, and nature-based learning teachers to ensure language is present across all experiences.
  • Community Engagement: participate in student-led conferences, open houses, and other events to support families in using ininimowin; build relationships that strengthen cultural and linguistic connections while celebrating dialectical differences.
  • Active, Participatory Learning: use functional, contextual language and move from whole-class instruction to student-led activities; facilitate experiences where students hear, speak, share, and reflect on their learning.
  • Effective Teaching Strategies: teach orally without English translation, using gestures, images, objects, and modeling; incorporate storytelling, nature walks, songs, and interactive, peer-to-peer teaching; ensure language from songs extends into conversation.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in ininimowin with an understanding of uncovering culture through language learning.
  • Experience in language revitalization or teaching an asset.
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills with teachers, students, families, and the community.
  • Passion for Ancestral Language Revitalization and socio-cultural, responsive education.
  • Ability to co-create engaging, child-centered learning experiences that prioritize oral language development.

Compensation

This is a 12-month position within the Professional Technical Group (PTG) of the Winnipeg School Division, offering a comprehensive benefits package.
