Job overview
We have an exciting position for a permanent part time speech and language therapist based within the Specialist Community Neurology Team.
The Specialist Community Neurology Service provides care to people across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) with diagnosed or probable neurological condition. The Speech and Language Therapists within the team also in reach into the integrated neighbourhood teams and bedded units to support the management of patients with communication and swallowing problems relating to their diagnosis.
The Specialist Community Neurology Service is a multi-professional team consisting of Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Speech and language therapists, Therapy assistants and admin staff. There are 9 current speech and language therapists within the service.
The post will be based at New Friends Hall in Bristol but the role will cover across BNSSG as the service requires.
Should you be successful in your application you would be expected to manage a caseload of people, seeing people within their place of residence, bedded units also also within the community, wherever their needs are best met. You will be expected to work both as an autonomous clinician and also for joint working with other members of the team.
Main duties of the job
- To delivery specialist speech and language therapy assessment, diagnosis and treatment to adults with communication and swallowing problems most commonly as a result of a diagnosed neurological condition, frailty or dementia.
- To be able to line manage other members of the team as needed including peers, junior staff and students.
- To be able to assess and treat a variety of communication and swallowing presentations in the community.
- To have core skills in dysphagia management.
- To be able to pull in different skills and knowledge into your practice to provide care to meet the person's individual needs.
- To support relevant service improvement projects as needed.
- To support the learning and development of the team via supervisions and being a part of the In Service Training rota.
- To keep up to date with your own professional CPD.
- To be a part of the triage rota, advice and guidance and care home support.
- To support other system wide meetings as appropriate.

Skills, Experience and Knowledge
- Specialist knowledge and experience of a wide range of therapeutic models of working with communication disorders and dysphagia in adults with neurological and medical conditions
- Experience of working as core member of MDT
- Knowledge and experience of working with augmentative and assisted communication
- Experience working with people for whom English is not a first language, and use of interpreters
- Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with a wide range of people
- Experience of planning and implementing training to others
- Ability to review and reflect on own skills and knowledge, and to lead own CPD in conjunction with supervisors and peers
- Advanced dysphagia skills: Independent working with patients with complex dysphagia in a range of settings/ with multiple aetiologies
- Demonstrates highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adult patients
- Ability to manage own time appropriately and to prioritise tasks
- Ability to recognise own professional boundaries and accept support/seek advice as appropriate
- Excellent organisational skills
- Knowledge of clinical governance and audit
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
- Ability to challenge and influence members of MDT
- Competent Information Technology skills, including use of Microsoft office tools, Outlook, Word, Excel
- Experience of working with adults with communication / swallowing disorders resulting from neurological diagnoses, in a community setting
Qualities and training Required
- Diploma/ degree in Speech and Language Therapy
- Evidence of CPD in communication and swallowing problems
- To be able to travel between a variety of locations within BNSSG. A motorised vehicle is required.
- Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy
