We’re London’s leading homelessness charity – and we get things done. In a city where hundreds are forced into homelessness every day, our work has never been more needed or more challenging. We prevent homelessness, provide safe places to live and give people the opportunity to rebuild their lives and transform their futures.
About the Night Support Assistant role:
Feeling safe shouldn’t stop mattering when the day team goes home. At St John’s Mansions in Islington, you’ll provide a calm, consistent and reassuring presence throughout the night, helping to make sure clients feel safe, respected and supported in their home. You’ll often be the first person someone turns to if something goes wrong overnight, so the way you respond can make a real difference.
As a Night Support Assistant, you’ll take responsibility for the safe and secure running of the service during your shift. You’ll manage access to the building, complete regular patrols and health and safety checks, monitor security, respond to safeguarding concerns and emergencies, and provide a first response to clients who need help. You’ll also support emergency placements where required and make sure significant incidents, concerns and actions are recorded clearly and handed over to the day team.
This is a role that calls for sound judgement, resilience and the confidence to stay calm when situations become challenging. Throughout your work, you’ll take a person-centred, psychologically informed and strengths-based approach, balancing safety and appropriate boundaries with dignity, choice and independence.
We have two Night Support Assistant opportunities available: one working four nights per week, Monday to Thursday, and one working three nights per week, Friday to Sunday, night shifts are 10pm - 08.15am. Whichever pattern you join, you’ll be part of the wider St John’s Mansions team, with regular supervision, training and opportunities to continue developing your knowledge and practice.
Skills and experience we're looking for in our Night Support Assistant:
- Can build positive, respectful relationships with people from a wide range of backgrounds while maintaining clear and professional boundaries.
- Is calm, resilient and confident under pressure, able to assess what is happening, prioritise effectively and respond appropriately to incidents or concerns.
- Understands the importance of safeguarding, health and safety and recovery-focused support, including the ways substance use may affect people’s wellbeing and safety.
- Can work in a person-centred, strengths-based and psychologically informed way, supporting people to have choice and control wherever possible.
- Is comfortable working independently, staying alert throughout a night shift and communicating clearly through accurate records and effective handovers.
Our attractive benefits package includes:
- A salary increase after successfully completing six month’s probationary period.
- A 37.5 hour working week including flexible working hours (core hours are 10am – 4pm) in non-accommodation services.
- 25 days annual leave, increasing annually to the maximum 30 days (plus paid Bank Holidays).
- A contributory pension scheme: Single Homeless Project will contribute the equivalent of 5% of your annual salary.
- Staff Health Cash Plan and discounts scheme.
- Comprehensive and integrated training programme designed specifically to develop the skills and knowledge involved in our work.
Closing date: Sunday 27th September at midnight. Interview date: Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th October online via Microsoft Teams. Please note there will be a second stage interview in service in Islington for suitable candidates.
