PIPs Interns are sought to join Singer Instruments, a company that designs robots to empower scientists in laboratories across over 60 countries, addressing global challenges such as cancer cures and renewable energy solutions.

Located in Exmoor on the UK's South West coast, Singer offers a world-class culture with an engaged team dedicated to creating great products. Please note, there are two conditions for being accepted for an internship with Singer Instruments: (1) The industry placement must be an explicit part of your programme of study, and (2) You must have funding to support yourself for three months. Singer Instruments will provide all necessary resources for your project and can assist with accommodation costs; however, all other expenses (e.g., travel, food) must be covered by the student or their institution. Students whose PhD programmes are supported by the British research council BBSRC or MRC automatically meet these requirements, and we also welcome other applicants who do.

The Roles

  • General: No prior knowledge is required, just a willingness to learn. Our R&D Manager and Senior Scientist completed their PIPs internships here and returned to work full-time after finishing their PhDs, demonstrating the rewarding nature of a placement with us. We will develop your project to suit you and deliver real business value while ensuring you gain exposure to meaningful experiences. The specific project and collaborators may vary based on departmental priorities, which can change rapidly. Examples of previous projects include:
    • Encoding an automated analysis report generation program to test our latest feature.
    • Proof of Concept experiments for high-throughput UV mutagenesis on the ROTOR+.
    • Market Research and product testing of our new Liquid Handler.
    • Design and testing of the user interface for our PIXL Zone of Inhibition beta feature.
  • Research: Our Research department ensures our products exceed the scientific capabilities required by our customers. PIPs students have designed and implemented instrument testing procedures, developed scientific workflows, collaborated with engineers to drive product development, and engineered data analysis platforms using R and Python.
  • Product Management: Join our dynamic team to shape the future of our products! Collaborate with various teams to gather insights, research competitors, and translate findings into actionable requirements for our engineers.
  • User Experience (UX): Interact with scientists to conduct questionnaires and interviews, discover their needs, highlight lab challenges, explore product development solutions, and test the impact of changes.
  • Marketing: Analyse customer segmentation data to uncover trends and contribute to strategies for developing compelling narratives and engaging content aimed at target markets.
  • Business Development: Search scientific literature for prospects that would benefit from our products, using your scientific skills to assess research methods and funding opportunities.
