Are you commercially driven, confident in building relationships and looking for a career where no two days are the same?
We are looking for an Associate Trader to join Sims Limited, working within its Sims Metal business and playing a key role in the Sales and Trading function.
Sims Limited is a global leader in circular solutions, delivering value to its stakeholders through innovative and responsible services across metal recycling and IT asset disposition.
Founded in Sydney, Australia, in 1917, Sims Metal is one of the world's leading metal recyclers and a business division of Sims Limited.
With operations across Australia, New Zealand and North America, Sims Metal buys, processes and sells ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal, supplying high-quality, furnace-ready recycled raw materials to manufacturers around the world.
This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys the commercial side of business: building relationships, identifying opportunities, negotiating, analysing markets and helping to buy and sell recycled raw materials profitably.
You will work closely with an experienced Senior Trader, gaining exposure to customers, suppliers, commodities and international markets while developing your commercial career within a global organisation.
The opportunity
If you are ambitious, commercially minded and want to build a career in sales and trading, this role will give you exposure to an international market from day one.
You will develop your understanding of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, recycled raw materials, customers, suppliers, margins and market movements.
At the same time, you will build the relationships, market knowledge and commercial skills needed to progress within Sims Limited.
What will you be doing?
As an Associate Trader, you will support the Senior Trader in growing volumes, developing new business and generating revenue.
Your responsibilities will include
- Identifying and developing new customer opportunities across Europe.
- Building strong relationships with existing customers, vendors and suppliers.
- Identifying new vendor and supplier opportunities across the UK, mainland Europe and South America.
- Supporting the buying and selling of ferrous and non-ferrous recycled metals and furnace-ready recycled raw materials.
- Analysing market intelligence and strategic data to support informed trading decisions.
- Working with customers and vendors to monitor deliveries and collections.
- Supporting the monitoring of customer and vendor payments.
- Visiting customer and supplier sites to develop your knowledge of the metals recycling industry, its markets and its operations.
- Maintaining accurate records of trades, meetings and wider commercial activity.
- Participating in market calls and contributing to market reports.
- Supporting the Senior Trader in achieving growth, volume, margin and sales targets.
- Travelling across the UK and Europe, including occasional overnight and international travel.
What are we looking for?
You do not need to have followed a traditional trading career path.
We are looking for someone with commercial instinct, drive and the ability to build credible, long-term relationships.
The successful candidate will have
- A bachelor's degree in any discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Ideally, one to two years' experience in a commercial, sales, buying, trading or related industry role, although strong candidates from other backgrounds will be considered.
- A genuine interest in sales, buying, commodities and the commercial side of business.
- Confidence communicating with a wide range of people.
- A proactive, entrepreneurial mindset and the drive to identify and pursue new opportunities.
- The resilience and determination to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong numerical and analytical ability, with an interest in margins, figures and market intelligence.
- Good organisational skills and close attention to detail.
- The ability to build credibility and strong relationships with customers, vendors and suppliers.
- A willingness to travel within the UK and internationally.
- A full UK driving licence.
Experience within metals recycling, commodities or another buying and selling environment would be advantageous, but it is not essential.
Most importantly, you will be a people person with commercial drive.
You will need to be comfortable picking up the phone, speaking to new people, asking questions, building relationships and pursuing opportunities.
Why join Sims Limited?
Sims Limited is a global organisation focused on enabling the circular economy through responsible and innovative services across metal recycling and IT asset disposition.
Through Sims Metal, you will be joining one of the world's leading metal recyclers, helping to recover value from end-of-life materials and supply manufacturers with high-quality recycled raw materials.
This role offers the opportunity to develop your career within a multifaceted global organisation, allowing you to explore different areas of the business as your experience and interests evolve.
Career progression
This is not a role where you are expected to stay in one lane.
As you build your knowledge, experience and commercial capability, there will be opportunities to progress and move within the wider Sims Limited organisation.
This will allow you to develop your career in the direction that best suits your strengths and ambitions.
You will receive support and mentoring from experienced colleagues, including the current UK trading team, alongside virtual support from senior leadership.
