The Role

We are seeking an experienced Permitting Manager to develop and maintain the environmental impacts assessment for a significant nuclear sector project in the UK. This role is crucial to the project's success, ensuring high levels of regulatory compliance and environmental protection standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive environmental assessment frameworks, handbooks, and detailed planning schedules
  • Model, measure, and assess environmental radioactivity and other environmental contaminants
  • Undertake offsite radiological and environmental impact assessments for discharges and disposal routes
  • Author technical specifications for environmental baseline studies and regulatory submission reports
  • Coordinate with technical specialists, engineers, and operations teams to gather input data for environmental assessments
  • Ensure identification of relevant environmental features, devices, systems, and circuits that are important to environmental protection
  • Develop processes for Design Reviews, HAZIDs, HAZOPs, and HASANs adequate for environmental compliance
  • Author and review environmental assessments and reports
  • Identify relevant environmental impact scenarios and establish processes for implementation
  • Manage environmental scenarios during construction, including impact assessments and change control
  • Liaise with Environment Agency (EA) and Local Planning Authority (LPA) during the permitting process
  • Provide subject matter expert guidance on environmental matters to project teams and senior management
  • Contribute to project environmental assessment workshops, design reviews, and BAT (Best Available Techniques) optioneering
  • Facilitate understanding of UK environmental regulatory context through briefing and training

Key Requirements

  • Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field
  • Experience in environmental assessment in an authoring role
  • Experience in developing specifications, scopes of work, environmental methodologies, and assessment strategies
  • Senior-level expertise in one or more specific areas of environmental analysis (e.g., ecology, soil characteristics, aqueous or gaseous discharge, radioactive contaminant management)
  • Experience in environmental assessment governance, regulatory challenge, review, and regulator liaison
  • Strong knowledge of UK environmental regulations and permitting processes
  • Experience within the nuclear sector highly desirable
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
