The Role

Our Client is recruiting for a highly motivated and skilled Senior Naval Architect to join their London based dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have hands‐on experience, with a strong background in ship or offshore floating assets design. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead and contribute to diverse engineering projects, collaborate with cross‐functional teams, and drive innovation in the maritime industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take a senior role in our naval architecture capability and development.
  • Prepare tender documentation for new projects.
  • Produce sound new designs for a variety of ship types, ranging from cargo ships to floating power plants or offshore vessels.
  • Conduct technical evaluations, feasibility studies, and risk assessments for this discipline.
  • Ability to understand, supervise, distribute and oversee analysis of important project criteria.
  • Ability to understand and implement maritime regulatory standards at both Statutory and Classification levels.
  • Calculate and give advice/assistance in assessing vessel performance (motions/stability/strength).
  • Review and approve calculation packages prepared by project teams and 3rd party design consultants (design drawings, motion analysis, stability analysis, strength assessments).
  • Review and approve plans throughout the lifecycle of a floating asset and attend technical meetings as company representative.
  • Supervise or conduct calculations for project teams (concept calculations, initial rule calculations, stability analysis, structural design compliant with Class).
  • Supervise and provide guidance on development of ship design drawing packages.
  • Advise or directly interface Classification Societies and/or Flag State representatives.
  • Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
  • Act as a mentor to junior engineers and internship students.
  • Ensure design and engineering work is performed and approved in accordance with engineering procedures or Project Quality Plans.
  • Availability to travel to the US or other international locations.

Key Requirements

Skills & Experience

  • BEng (Hons), MEng or MSc (or equivalent) in Naval Architecture, Ship Science, or other relevant subject (minimum 2:1/Distinction or equivalent).
  • UK citizenship or a valid UK visa permitting full-time employment, with citizenship from DOE Part 810 authorised countries only.
  • Experience in the marine shipping industry, ship design, Classification or offshore industry.

Preferred Qualifications / Experience:

  • Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (preferred).
  • Registration with the Engineering Council is desirable.
  • Direct experience in multidisciplinary design projects in the nuclear and / or marine industry.
  • Solid engineering background with knowledge of vessel structure, machinery and systems.
  • Knowledge and day‐to‐day use of rules/resolutions covering passenger and cargo ship operation.
  • Experience with classification approval processes and new technology qualification.
  • Ability to use stability software (NAPA), FEA (ANSYS) and 3D modelling (SOLIDWORKS) is desirable.
  • Proficient in MS Office and CAD tools such as AutoCAD.
  • Comfortable completing calculations using both first principles and computational methods.
  • Critical thinking skills and ability to manage design uncertainties and identify risk mitigations.
