The Role
We are recruiting for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join a well-established and growing manufacturing business based in Seaham.
This is a key site-based role responsible for leading the Health, Safety and Environmental function within a busy manufacturing and production environment.
Working closely with the Site Manager and wider operational leadership team, you will take ownership of health and safety strategy, compliance and day-to-day HSE activity, while driving a positive and proactive safety culture across the site.
This is very much a hands-on manufacturing H&S role, so we are looking for someone who is comfortable being visible on the production floor, engaging with employees and challenging unsafe practices where required.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Health, Safety and Environmental activity across the manufacturing site.
- Develop, implement and continuously improve HSE policies, procedures and safe systems of work.
- Ensure the site remains compliant with relevant UK health, safety and environmental legislation.
- Carry out and review risk assessments, method statements and safe working procedures.
- Lead investigations into accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Work closely with Production, Engineering, Quality and Operations teams to continually improve site safety.
- Carry out regular site inspections, audits and safety walkarounds.
- Monitor HSE performance and report against relevant KPIs.
- Promote a proactive behavioural safety culture across the workforce.
- Provide practical H&S advice and guidance to managers and employees.
- Deliver and coordinate toolbox talks, inductions and safety training.
- Ensure appropriate controls are in place relating to COSHH, PUWER, LOLER and other relevant manufacturing legislation.
- Manage contractor health and safety requirements, including permits to work.
- Support environmental compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate HSE records, documentation and reporting.
- Liaise with external bodies, auditors and regulatory authorities where required.
- Identify areas of risk and proactively introduce improvements to reduce incidents and improve overall site safety.
About You
- To be considered for this position, you must have previous Health & Safety management experience within a manufacturing or production
- Experience solely within an office, corporate or non-operational environment will not be suitable for this position.
- You will be confident operating in a busy production environment and comfortable working closely with operational and engineering teams at all levels.
Essential
- NEBOSH General Certificate or higher - essential.
- Proven Health & Safety experience within a manufacturing or production environment - essential.
- Strong understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation.
- Experience carrying out risk assessments and developing safe systems of work.
- Experience investigating accidents, incidents and near misses.
- Good working knowledge of COSHH, PUWER and LOLER.
- Experience conducting H&S audits and site inspections.
- Strong communication and influencing skills.
- Ability to challenge unsafe behaviours professionally and constructively.
