Are you an experienced Attendance, Pastoral or Student Support professional who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education? I'm currently working with a Secondary Academy in Strood who are looking for an Attendance Improvement Co-ordinator to provide temporary maternity cover within their team. This is a key role within the academy, working closely with pupils, families, pastoral and safeguarding teams and external agencies to improve attendance, punctuality and engagement.
About the Role
Your core focus will be to improve pupil attendance and punctuality, identifying barriers to attendance and putting effective interventions in place to help pupils access their education and achieve their potential. Key responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring and analysing attendance, punctuality and persistent absence data
- Identifying attendance concerns and trends early and implementing appropriate interventions
- Working directly with pupils and parents/carers to understand and overcome barriers to attendance
- Conducting attendance meetings and maintaining accurate records and agreed actions
- Managing first-day absence procedures and following up unexplained absences
- Developing and supporting individual attendance improvement plans
- Monitoring pupils at risk of becoming persistently absent
- Working closely with pastoral, safeguarding and SEND teams
- Liaising with the Local Authority, Education Welfare Services and other external agencies
- Preparing attendance reports and maintaining accurate records
- Supporting families with attendance expectations, procedures and available support
- Escalating attendance concerns where there may be a safeguarding or welfare risk
- Ensuring all information is handled confidentially and in line with GDPR and school policies
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience within school attendance, pastoral support, inclusion, family liaison, safeguarding or a similar role
- Experience working with children, young people and families
- A good understanding of persistent absence and barriers to school attendance
- Confidence holding professional and sometimes sensitive conversations with parents/carers
- Strong administration, organisation and data-handling skills
- The ability to build positive relationships with pupils and families
- An understanding of safeguarding and pupil welfare
- Confidence working collaboratively with school staff and external professionals
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate and confidential records
- A proactive, resilient and compassionate approach
