Role Overview

We are seeking a reliable, highly organised and financially astute School Bursar to manage the nursery\’s financial operations and administrative processes. This is a key role within the nursery operations team, supporting the Head of Nursery to ensure the smooth day-to-day financial and administrative running of the setting.

The successful candidate will oversee budgeting, payroll coordination, invoicing, and financial reporting, while also ensuring we meet statutory and regulatory requirements for early years settings. Our nursery is a warm, welcoming, and Ofsted-rated \”Good\” setting dedicated to providing high-quality early years education for children aged 6 months to 5 years. With a child-centred approach and strong community values, we pride ourselves on offering a nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and inspired to learn through play. Our team is passionate, professional, and committed to continuous improvement – and we are now looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Bursar to join us in a vital support role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the nursery\’s budget, financial planning and forecasting

  • Prepare and maintain accurate financial reports for management and trustees/directors

  • Oversee billing and fee collection, liaising with parents on invoicing queries

  • Manage payroll processes and liaise with external providers

  • Monitor income and expenditure in line with funding entitlements

  • Support funding applications and nursery grant management

  • Act as a point of contact for finance-related queries from staff and families

Prerequisites

  • Previous experience in a financial administration or school bursar role

  • Understanding of nursery/early years funding and childcare billing processes (preferred)

  • Strong numeracy and Excel skills; experience using finance software (e.g. Xero, Sage, or similar)

  • Excellent organisation, time management and attention to detail

  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality

  • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain)
