Join a Supportive SEMH Secondary School in Crewe. Simply Education are working in partnership with an Ofsted-rated Good SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) secondary school in Crewe to recruit an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA). This is a full-time, long-term position with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate. The school has a passionate, dedicated team and offers a positive, inclusive environment where both students and staff are supported to succeed.
As a HLTA, you will play a key role in helping students with SEMH and behavioural needs reach their full potential, both academically and emotionally. You will lead small group and 1:1 interventions, deliver pre-planned lessons during PPA cover or teacher absence, and support the class teacher in creating a calm, structured and engaging learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver pre-planned lessons during PPA time or when covering teacher absences.
- Support teaching and learning across the curriculum under the direction of the class teacher.
- Lead small group and 1:1 interventions to support academic progress and emotional wellbeing.
- Promote positive behaviour and use effective de-escalation strategies.
- Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents.
- Contribute to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
- Collaborate with the SENCO, teaching staff, and external agencies to support pupil development.
Requirements
- HLTA qualification or equivalent experience supporting learning at a higher level.
- At least two years of recent, checkable references.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
- Previous experience supporting students with SEMH, autism, or behavioural needs.
- Sound understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills.
Desirable
- Experience working in a special school or alternative provision.
- Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or other behaviour management approaches.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed or restorative practices.
- First Aid or Mental Health First Aid qualification.
