We are looking for a Senior Development Manager to join our IT department in Bristol or London. This key new role in the IT Applications team will help deliver enhancements to our existing application estate and any new applications introduced to the estate. The role will lead internal and external development teams and manage the end-to-end delivery of software changes from development through testing, production deployment and early lifecycle support. It oversees code development, source-code branching and integration, robust testing and controlled release cycles. Working with the Application Architect, the Senior Development Manager will ensure delivery follows the correct technical direction and remains aligned with agreed designs. The role is the primary point of coordination for development teams, the Amsterdam-based data and integrations teams, QA/testing, IT Operations and business stakeholders, ensuring high-quality, timely and reliable delivery.
What will you do:
- Delivery Management
- Oversee the full software delivery lifecycle (SDLC), from requirements handover through development, testing, deployment, early lifecycle support and hypercare.
- Plan and manage delivery timelines with internal and external development teams, ensuring releases are delivered on schedule and within agreed scope and quality parameters.
- Coordinate activities across development, QA, DevOps and business stakeholders to remove blockers and maintain progress.
- Maintain and communicate release plans, including content, dependencies, risk assessments and deployment windows.
- Code Development Oversight
- Work closely with development leads and the Application Architect to ensure coding standards, best practices, architectural guidelines and agreed designs are followed.
- Monitor development progress against plans, identifying risks and issues early and driving remediation.
- Support the prioritisation of work, helping balance new features, technical debt remediation and defect fixes.
- Facilitate code reviews and ensure that changes are appropriately documented.
- Branching & Source Control Management
- Define, govern and oversee a clear code management and release path for all deliveries, including feature, release and hotfix branches, emergency fixes and impact assessment against planned deliverables.
- Ensure consistent use of branching, merging and tagging conventions across all development teams.
- Manage integration of code from multiple streams, ensuring conflicts are resolved and code baselines remain stable.
- Work with DevOps/engineering teams to maintain a clean and controlled repository structure.
- Testing & Quality Assurance
- Oversee testing activities (unit, integration, system, regression, performance and user acceptance testing) to ensure adequate coverage.
- Ensure test environments, test data and tools are in place and aligned with delivery timelines and the documented Test Strategy.
- Collaborate with QA leads to define and document the method, entry/exit criteria and production-readiness requirements for each testing phase.
- Track defects, prioritise fixes with development teams and ensure quality gates are met, leading to fully formed release packages for deployment.
- Deployment & Release Management
- Manage the deployment cycle, including planning, coordination and execution of fully formed release packages across development, test, staging and production environments.
- Work with DevOps/operations to define and refine CI/CD pipelines, deployment scripts and rollback procedures.
- Ensure change management processes are followed, including approvals, communication and documentation of releases.
- Monitor post-deployment behaviour, coordinating early lifecycle support, hypercare and incident resolution as required.
- Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to internal policies, regulatory requirements and audit standards related to software changes and releases.
- Identify delivery risks (e.g. resource constraints, dependencies, environment issues) and implement mitigation plans.
- Maintain accurate records of changes, releases and associated approvals for audit and traceability purposes.
- Stakeholder Management & Communication
- Act as the key delivery contact for product owners, business sponsors and other stakeholders.
- Provide clear and regular reporting on delivery status, risks, issues and dependencies.
- Facilitate cross functional meetings (e.g. stand ups, release readiness reviews, post implementation reviews).
- Manage expectations regarding scope, timelines and quality, and negotiate trade offs where necessary.
- Continuous Improvement
- Review delivery processes and practices regularly to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Drive adoption of agile, DevOps and automation practices to increase efficiency and reliability.
- Capture lessons learned from each release and ensure they are fed back into future delivery cycles.
What we are looking for:
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Relevant professional certifications (e.g. ITIL, Agile, Scrum Master, DevOps certifications) are an advantage.
- Proven experience in IT delivery, release management, or software development management roles.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum, Kanban) and DevOps practices.
- Hands‐on experience with source‐code management tools (e.g. Git) and branching/merging strategies.
- Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g. Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI, Bamboo).
- Familiarity with Elite 3E, Intapp, Workday and iManage (Cloud, Work 10) and other legal information systems.
- Experience overseeing testing activities and working closely with QA teams.
- Demonstrable experience in managing complex deployment cycles and coordinating multiple teams, internal and external to the organisation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organisational, planning and prioritisation skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Detail‐oriented with a strong focus on quality and risk management and comfortable dealing with ambiguity.
- Proactive, with the ability to anticipate issues and drive resolution.
- Collaborative and able to build strong working relationships across technical and non‐technical teams.
- Understanding of On-Prem, Hybrid and Public Cloud Infrastructure services and Networking fundamentals, technologies and associated infrastructures.
- Strong Experience of the services sector culture, ideally within legal, professional or financial services.
