We are proud to partner with a global leader in the Shipping industry, who are seeking an experienced shipping lawyer (5+PQE) to join their well established and highly regarded legal function in London. You will be working closely with and reporting into the Group GC and you will also manage one direct report in an international office.

You will ideally have trained in a top law firm in the UK, P&I Clubs experience will also be considered, and you will ideally have some in‑house experience in shipping/commodities. You will be entrusted with comprehensive commercial guidance, transaction counselling, and dispute resolution for our business operations in the EU and UK. You will need to possess a profound understanding of maritime matters, to efficiently handle these responsibilities.

You will work on complex tanker voyage charter parties, intricately handling negotiations, preparation, interpretation, and resolution of disputes. You will provide pivotal support related to insurance, delivering legal backing in dispute resolutions. Your role will involve assessing and analysing disputes, preparing cases for litigation or arbitration, and coordinating with external legal counsel. Your role also involves supporting ship construction, repair, sale, and scrapping processes, emphasizing international trade and EU regulations.

You will be advising business management to ensure legal alternatives and constraints are thoroughly understood during decision‑making, nurturing a cooperative environment while guaranteeing compliance with applicable laws and regulations. You will further be involved in general commercial legal matters for the tanker, tank container and terminals.

Key responsibilities:
  • All maritime legal matters initiated in Europe and the Middle East.
  • Resolve disputes, prepare cases, and liaise with external legal counsel as required.
  • Counsel business management within the decision‑making process, outlining legal alternatives and constraints.
  • Secure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and conventions applicable to worldwide operations, accounting for local variations.
Qualifications:
  • Experience as an in‑house lawyer or private practice lawyer in an international setting.
  • Profound understanding of maritime matters, charter parties, marine insurance, and ship-related contracts.
  • Familiarity with international trade and compliance law is advantageous.
  • General corporate and commercial experience is also advantageous.
