What you will do
We are offering an amazing opportunity to train under the Catering & Hospitality sector as a Baker.
You will spend approximately 4 months in each of our production departments learning specific skills and gaining an understanding of the production processes and procedures for each product.
Typical products include
- Bread & Rolls
- Traybakes i.e. shortbread, rocky road, flapjack, caramel shortbread etc.
- Ambient Gateaux i.e. rainbow cake, chocolate fudge cake, celebration cakes etc.
- Daily Goods i.e. Belgian buns, Danish pastries, scones etc.
- Weekly goods i.e. biscuits, vegan cakes, cupcakes etc.
- Savoury goods i.e. traditional pasties, sausage rolls, cheese & bacon puff etc.
What is required of you
- Under the direct guidance of the departmental manager, you will gain an in-depth knowledge of how each department operates from ordering ingredients from the stores, to despatch of the finished product and onward journey to our shops.
- You will learn our PC based recipe, traceability and labelling systems.
- You will become an effective member of the team, participating in all aspects of production. Your duties will be allocated to the needs of the business taking the modules of the apprenticeship into account.
- Each module will be assessed before being undertaken to ensure all sections are adequately covered within the bakery departments, as required by the assessing body.
Requirements
The course is a full-time position hosted entirely at Simmons, with regular visits from a National Food & Drink Training advisor who will carry out course-specific practical work as well as covering all theory work.
Whilst the course is practical rather than academic, a small amount of coursework will be completed with the training advisor.
In terms of final exams, there will be a question-based multiple choice test as well as a final practical exam. These are also carried out on-site.
The ideal candidate for our apprenticeship will have a passion for food and a keen interest in baking. You may already have some knowledge, training or work experience in food production etc.
There are no minimum grades needed for our apprenticeship, with the only requirements being a keen willingness to learn, a good work ethic and prompt timekeeping.
