Job Description
The Role:
A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced Finance Director to join a long-established and highly reputable motor trade organisation based in Barnstaple. This is a key strategic appointment, forming part of the business's long-term leadership planning.
The role would suit a qualified finance professional with experience managing a full finance function and providing leadership at board level. Automotive experience is desirable but not essential. Applications are also welcomed from ambitious Financial Controllers or senior finance professionals who are looking to take the next step in their career, with development and progression fully supported.
Key Responsibilities:
Full management of the company’s finance function – accounts, audit, budgeting, cashflow, payroll, and credit control
Leading and mentoring a small finance team (currently 3 staff)
Overseeing HR processes, H&S, FCA compliance, and company secretarial duties
Providing operational finance support – including stock funding, vehicle costings, and system reporting
Supporting board-level planning and contributing to commercial strategy
Ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with all legal and regulatory standards
Collaborating across departments to drive efficiency and business performance
About You:
Fully qualified accountant (ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
Proven experience in a senior finance leadership role (e.g. Finance Director, Financial Controller)
Broad knowledge of financial controls, forecasting, credit control, and payroll
Ability to manage people, drive improvements, and implement robust systems
Strong understanding of business operations and commercial finance
HR, H&S, FCA or company secretarial knowledge desirable
Automotive or motor trade background is beneficial but not essential
Candidates in a Financial Controller or similar role looking for long-term progression are encouraged to apply
Strategic thinker with excellent communication and leadership skills
Package:
Basic salary between £50,000 – £85,000, depending on experience
Monday to Friday working hours (full-time, office based with flexibility)
