The Digital Systems Engineer will lead the definition, development, and delivery of spacecraft On-Board Data Handling (OBDH) systems in support of Functional Avionics. The role covers digital avionics equipment for a Space customer across the full project lifecycle (Phases B–E), ensuring delivery in line with On Time, On Quality, On Cost (OTOQOC) objectives. The role works closely with Functional Avionics, system engineering, suppliers, and the customer, and reports operationally to the Electrical Systems (ELSYS) Lead.
Responsibilities
- Own and deliver the OBDH work package, including hardware, firmware, models, and documentation
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for all OBDH-related matters
- Define OBDH requirements and architectures (functional and electrical) based on mission needs
- Specify and manage digital avionics equipment, including:
- On-Board Computer (OBC)
- Remote Interface Unit (RIU)
- Mass Memory & Formatting Unit (MMFU)
- Instrument Control Unit (ICU)
- Other digital equipment as required (e.g. crypto/authentication units)
Skills and Qualifications
Essential
- Strong background in digital avionics engineering for spacecraft or complex embedded systems
- Experience with spacecraft data handling systems and spacecraft operations
- Proven experience across system lifecycle phases (B–E)
- Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and external suppliers
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills
Desirable
- Experience with supplier co-engineering in a space or safety-critical environment
- Familiarity with system-level AIT and launch campaign support
- Exposure to functional avionics architectures and system engineering processes
