The Opportunity
SII is seeking a Product Safety Engineer to support safety-critical defence programmes. The role involves delivering product safety activities across the lifecycle, developing safety arguments, and ensuring compliance with MOD standards. Based in Bristol with UK travel, this is an excellent opportunity to work on complex, high-impact systems in a regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver Product and System Safety Engineering activities in accordance with statutory requirements and the SII Safety & Environmental Management System.
- Support Safety and Technical Authorities in developing and maintaining robust, evidence-based product safety arguments.
- Lead and contribute to hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk management activities across the product lifecycle.
- Produce, maintain, and peer-review safety artefacts (e.g. Hazard Logs, Safety Cases, DDSoS).
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, and standards (e.g. DEF Stan, JSPs, IEC).
- Provide safety input to design reviews, bids, and project governance forums.
- Act as a Product Safety focal point for assigned projects, escalating safety issues where required.
- Support accurate estimating, reporting, and delivery of safety work packages.
Essential Experience and Skills
- Proven experience delivering Product Safety Engineering on MOD or defence projects (not HSE/QSEP).
- Strong knowledge of product safety legislation, regulation, and standards.
- Practical experience with hazard analysis and risk management techniques (e.g. FMEA, FTA, ETA).
- Engineering qualification and/or demonstrable experience in engineering safety management.
- Ability to produce clear, structured safety arguments and documentation.
- Member of a relevant professional body.
- Eligible for, or holding, UK Security Clearance.
Desirable Experience and Skills
- Chartered Engineer status, or actively working towards chartership.
- Experience with standards such as DEF Stan 00-056/055/051, IEC 61508, JSPs, DSA02 or equivalents.
- Experience in large platform, complex systems, or systems-of-systems safety integration.
- Experience supporting bids and early lifecycle safety activities.
