Role: Backend engineer
Location: London, England - hybrid
Contract: Perm
What you’ll be doing:
- You’ll play a key role as a senior individual contributor, taking ownership of building and evolving a modern, cloud‑based product.
- This is a hands‑on position where you’ll write high‑quality, maintainable code across the stack while setting a strong example for engineering standards and best practices.
- You’ll work closely with product and leadership to translate business priorities into clear, deliverable technical plans, making balanced decisions around speed, quality and risk.
- A big part of the role is improving how software is delivered by identifying bottlenecks and introducing better ways of working, including thoughtful use of automation and AI‑assisted development tools.
- You’ll also help shape engineering practices across code quality, testing, CI/CD and architecture, and step in on more complex technical challenges, whether that’s performance, scalability or system design.
- Alongside this, you’ll contribute to building a culture of continuous improvement, where new tools and approaches are evaluated pragmatically and adopted where they add real value.
What we’re looking for:
- We’re looking for someone who takes real ownership of their work and holds a high bar for quality.
- You’ll be naturally curious, especially around how modern tooling and AI are changing the development lifecycle, but grounded enough to apply this in a practical and secure way.
- You should be comfortable operating in a fast‑paced environment, making sound decisions even when there’s some ambiguity.
- Strong communication is key: you’ll need to explain technical concepts and trade‑offs clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Above all, you’ll bring a collaborative mindset and a genuine interest in building products that deliver meaningful outcomes for the business and its customers.
Experience:
- 4+ years experience as a software developer.
- Backend experience with either Java or Kotlin.
- Solid understanding of frontend development (e.g. React) and experience building and maintaining production grade user facing applications.
- Database experience such as PostgreSQL or MongoDB in scalable, real‑world environments.
- AWS experience and familiarity with containerisation and infrastructure as code (e.g. Docker, Terraform).
- Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and owning services through the full delivery lifecycle.
- Practical use of AI assisted development tools or automation to improve engineering workflows, with an understanding of associated risks (e.g. security, maintainability).
- Worked in a regulatory industry.
