Sifted, the award-winning tech news outlet backed by the Financial Times, is looking for a fintech reporter to join us covering the world of European startups and tech. You will be responsible for reporting on Europe’s world-leading fintech industry, including areas such as digital banking, payments, financial infrastructure, crypto and embedded finance. You will be expected to break news, conduct in-depth interviews with founders, investors and policymakers and produce clear, well-researched analysis that helps readers understand developments across the sector.
We are looking for a reporter with strong news judgement, the ability to develop sources and a clear sense of what matters in European fintech. You should be comfortable working across formats — from written articles to podcasts and video — and have ideas about how coverage could be improved. While fintech will be your core focus, you will be encouraged to think broadly about how financial technology intersects with regulation, capital markets, geopolitics and the wider startup ecosystem, while also contributing to the development of Sifted’s editorial priorities.
You will work closely with a collaborative team of journalists with experience at outlets including the Financial Times, Bloomberg, Reuters, Dagens Industri, Fortune and Wired. We strongly encourage applicants from underrepresented backgrounds to apply for this position.
About Sifted: Six years after launching, Sifted’s high-quality journalism is a must-read for many founders, investors and people working in startups and scaleups across the continent. We produce must-read journalism and intelligence on Europe’s innovation economy, distributed via our website, newsletters, weekly podcast, proprietary data trackers, briefings and reports. We have a fast-growing subscription product and hold a profitable annual event, The Sifted Summit. We’re friendly, hard-working and passionate about what we do. We have a flat structure, collaborate across disciplines and everyone has an impact across many areas of the business. We value feedback, honesty and clear communication.
What will you be doing? Reporting to our news editor Martin Coulter, it will be your mission to ensure Sifted is always on top of (and making!) industry news. You will spearhead our weekly Fintech newsletter, which has over 35k subscribers, and take the lead on all our fintech-focused events throughout the year. Like all our reporters, you’ll also have the opportunity to star in our weekly podcast, moderate in-person and online events hosted by Sifted and regularly travel abroad to attend industry events.
Location: Our London office is on the Strand, where the majority of our editorial team work. (A third of our editorial team are based in continental Europe.) We ask all editors and reporters to come into the office at least two days per week. For this role, we’re open to applicants based in any major tech hub in Europe.
You’ll need to have:
- Two or more years’ editorial experience
- A competitive — but also collaborative — spirit
- A self-starting attitude
- Fluent English, excellent attention to detail and an eye for a good story (and headline)
- Be comfortable (and excited to!) work in an environment where things move fast and often change
Salary of £40-43k, dependent on experience. 28 days annual leave, plus local public holidays. Company pension scheme. Cycle to work scheme. Hybrid work environment. Clear and thoughtful personal development pathways for all employees. Regular team socials and a great company culture. Enhanced parental leave. Working hours of 9:00-5:30.
To apply: Please send us three pitches (headline + a few bullet points) for stories you would write in your first few months in this role. Please also share one idea for Sifted more broadly: a newsletter we should launch (or revamp); a new product we should develop; a media format we should expand into etc. Along with your CV and cover letter to careers@sifted.eu. Please make sure your cover letter is in a separate document.
