Our Team:
Join a world-class engineering team at Semtech’s Bristol Design Centre, where we’re developing high-performance semiconductor solutions that enable next-generation optical access networks. As a market leader in PON ONU chipsets—supporting legacy GPON, current 10Gbps XG(S)PON, and future 25G/50G applications—we design advanced APD/PIN TIAs, laser drivers, receivers, and integrated transceivers powering global fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure. You\’ll work alongside talented RF IC designers and engineers, collaborating across multiple disciplines to shape the future of high-speed connectivity.

Job Summary:

This is a hands-on, technically demanding role for an experienced engineer with a passion for precision testing, signal integrity, and cross-functional collaboration. As a Senior Staff Characterisation Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the bring-up, automation, and execution of test systems for high-speed mixed-signal ICs. Using state-of-the-art bench equipment (DCA, BERT, LCA, etc.) and Python-based automation, you\’ll measure, analyse, and report product performance across PVT conditions, supporting successful new product introductions from early development through to release.

If you thrive in a fast-paced R&D environment, love solving technical challenges, and want to work on products used in millions of homes worldwide, this is your opportunity.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely across functions—design, validation, test, product, and applications—throughout the full NPI lifecycle.
  • Develop and execute detailed characterisation test plans for new mixed-signal/optical ICs.
  • Specify and configure lab-based test equipment for high-speed optical/electrical characterisation.
  • Design and implement test setups including PCBs, fixturing, and integration of test instruments.
  • Develop Python-based automation software to streamline characterisation workflows.
  • Perform hands-on lab testing using BERTs, DCAs, VNAs, and other high-frequency equipment.
  • Analyse data and produce high-quality reports, presenting findings in formal design and review meetings.
  • Troubleshoot unexpected results, identify root causes, and work proactively to de-bug and resolve issues.
  • Prioritise and manage tasks effectively, ensuring delivery of characterisation results to schedule.
  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships to drive progress and ensure product success.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BSc/MSc in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or HNC/HND with equivalent industry experience.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic R&D environment.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills—collaborative, reliable, and transparent.
  • Excellent analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Able to self-learn and independently acquire technical knowledge.
  • Passion for problem-solving and creative innovation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in the semiconductor or optical communications industry.
  • Strong fundamentals in signal integrity and high-speed lab testing.
  • Proficient in Python scripting for test automation.
  • Experience with test instrumentation such as BERTs, DCAs, VNAs, and LCAs.
