This is a function leadership role, not a product IC role and not a programme role. You will inherit and lead an established team — including a mature, well regarded data function (engineering, analytics, governance) and an emerging AI capability — with full ownership of its budget, hiring, performance and development, reporting one step from the executive committee and presenting regularly to the Board.

The role demands three things at once, and we will test all three: Candidates deep in one of these but absent in another will not be progressed.

  • You lead data teams today. A standing data function has reported to you — data engineers, analysts, governance — and you can talk credibly about how you developed the team, not just what it built.
  • You have owned digital product. Customer facing journeys, adoption and channel shift, with numbers you'll defend — not platforms for internal users, not roadmaps you influenced from the side.
  • You set AI strategy and shipped it. An AI vision you authored, and at least one AI use case you took from proof‑of‑value into governed production with measured value.

The organisation is a large customer facing organisation, hundreds of thousands of customers, c.£1bn‑scale, with a large in‑house field workforce delivering essential services.

You will lead and grow the function, data, digital product and AI, multi‑million direct budget, influence over a technology portfolio ten times larger. Own the AI strategy the Board is asking for, the multi‑year vision, the governance that accelerates rather than blocks, the discipline that takes working prototypes into production with value cases attached. Drive customer channel shift, journeys redesigned end to end, adoption measured.
