We are looking for an energetic and hardworking Engineering Manager – Digital Substations to join our York or Coventry office as part of the Rail Electrification business. You will report into the Head of Engineering (Design and Delivery) and lead the Digital Substations, Protection, Control and High Voltage Design teams.
In this role, you will lead the delivery of compliant, cost-effective, and technically robust engineering designs, acting as Contract Engineering Manager or Contractors’ Responsible Engineer on key projects. You’ll oversee resource planning, team development, and performance management, while driving continuous improvement in standards and procedures. Another key aspect of the role is supporting tendering activities, ensuring high-quality bid submissions, and maintaining full design traceability through inspection, testing, and accurate Bill of Materials are aligned with Siemens’ digital substation and design requirements.
You’ll make a difference by
- Leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams across product integration including switchgear (AC and DC), protection & control devices and design, SCADA and all ancillary functions into substation solutions, digital substation and high voltage application design teams ensuring high-quality, innovative solutions
- Driving individual and team development through recruitment, mentoring, training, and performance management to build a high-performing engineering function
- Upholding compliance with technical and safety standards across all design work, supporting successful project delivery and long-term reliability
- Collaborating cross-functionally with engineering discipline managers, project teams, and senior leadership to ensure efficient design and construction assurance processes
- Supporting the Head of Products with the application of HV switchgear and protection/control products or Research and Development products for the UK market
- Developing and implementing strategies to improve engineering efficiency, including process improvements, resource planning, technology and tooling and utilisation
Your success will be grounded by
- BSc, Beng or Meng degree in Electrical Engineering
- Member of the IET or another recognised Professional Body
- Chartered Engineer status
- Extensive knowledge and experience of UK Electrification Infrastructure, High Voltage design & application for Electrification Projects
- Track record of Traction Power installations, specific staff proficiencies and current UK initiatives
- Experience with direct client interface and representing the business to external parties
- Strong understanding and practical skills of handling the operational requirements of railway construction works (desirable)
