Advanced Apprentice – Rail Engineering Technician (Level 3)

You will be based at our Ardwick Train Maintenance Facility in Manchester, where we maintain a fleet of Class 185 trains for our customer, Transpennine Express. The work you will be involved in ranges from large component overhauls, rectification of defects, regular servicing and using our digital platforms to carry out remote fault diagnosis.
Here is how the programme works
Whilst on the Apprenticeship you will be following an apprenticeship standard ST0318 Rail Engineering Technician, Traction and Rolling Stock Pathway.
The programme structure will be:
- Day release at college
- Work on real life projects within the workplace
- Personalised training plan to develop specific skills and knowledge required for your role
- Kickstart your professional career at Siemens Mobility by the end of the programme
As an Apprentice at Ardwick Depot, your role will include:
- Learning hands‑on maintenance skills on our Class 185 trains
- Understanding traction and safety systems in the rail industry
- Developing technical knowledge through structured training programmes
- Assisting technicians with routine maintenance tasks and inspections
- Gaining practical experience with modern railway systems
- Working alongside skilled professionals while studying for recognised qualifications
- Building a foundation for a rewarding career in engineering
Essential skills and attributes
- At least 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Maths and English Language
- No Level 2 PEO (Performing Engineering Operations)
You must NOT have completed the following to apply to this role
- Level 3 Engineering Diploma (BTEC)
- Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME)
