We have an exciting new opportunity for aPower Conversion Secondary Systems Lead Design Engineerto join our York office as part of the Rail Electrification business. Our team has a strong track record of successfully delivering power conversion projects and integrating innovative technologies into the UK rail network. This is a unique opportunity to join a team of dedicated specialists who are shaping the future of railway electrification in the UK and global projects
You will report into the Principal Design Engineer and will be responsible for leading the delivery of secondary systems, control & protection designs for Power Conversion projects. You will apply your design and construction experience in innovative waysto guide the optimal development of secondary design to meet environmental, safety, cost and programme objectives.
In this lead role, you will oversee and deliver customer training, support Pre-FAT, FAT and commissioning activities and be responsible for the administration and co-ordination of signal lists to ensure seamless project execution. Occasional site visits are expected to review design implementation and address any on-site challenges so some travel is expected.
You’ll make a difference by
- Leading the production of hardware designs and circuit diagrams for control & protection panels for high voltage AC Substations and Converter stations utilising Power Electronics
- Being responsible for the creation and delivery of project specific technical documentation including manuals, detailed design/configuration of secondary systems and control & protection designs
- Leading technical discussions with customers, EPCs and consultants to resolve selection of appropriate systems in order to meet customer requirements
- Handling work packages for sub-suppliers including supervision and quality assurance for the designs and support by the acceptance/functional tests which could include occasional business trips
- Taking accountability and ownership for quality, cost and delivery
- Mentoring junior designers, bringing your own expertise to elevate the overall quality and performance of the team and fostering a culture of continuous improvement
Your success will be grounded by
- BSc, BEng or MEng degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering
- Member of the IET or another recognised Professional Body
- Proven experience in design & implementation of secondary systems, control & protection design in HV substations (preferably utilising Power Electronics technologies in HVDC and/or FACTS projects)
- Extensive experience with Secondary Systems automated design software such as ELCAD, Engineering Base, COMOS and CAD/BIM software including AutoCAD, MicroStation and ProjectWise
- Handling key interfaces between design, construction and commissioning
- Experienced in Project safety requirements, Health & Safety standards (including CDM regulations) applicable to the design of High Voltage substations
