At Siemens Mobility, we believe our people are the cornerstone of our success. We are committed to nurturing a supportive and inclusive environment where every team member can thrive. We encourage internal movement, growth and development and this is as important as our shared mission to innovate and transform the Rail industry.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer to join Rail Infrastructure as part of Communication and Information Services (CIS) business. This role is office based, with the primary location in Ashby De-La-Zouch.

In CIS, we deliver Rail Infrastructure systems for customers across the UK and internationally. Our portfolio includes the provision of event driven control and monitoring solutions tailored for Centralised SCADA & Line-wide systems, Stations & Utilities, Power SCADA, Control Systems, Tunnel Ventilation, M&E, and many more. We undertake the full engineering delivery life cycle across various projects.

The Senior Design Engineer will own deliverables through specification development, development and deployment of SCADA and control system solutions, setting technical direction and continually refining engineering best practice.

You will play a key role in shaping system architectures, functionality design and first-in-type solutions, driving reuse and where appropriate while also leading the creation of new, modular components where the solution demands it. The role spans the full engineering lifecycle - from early concept and bid support through detailed design, development, integration and delivery. This position suits an engineer who is technically credible, systems-minded, comfortable leading others, and being hands-on.

Responsibilities

  • Delivering engineering activities for complex multi‑discipline systems, owning technical outcomes and ensuring solutions meet customer, safety and compliance requirements.
  • Driving core systems engineering activities including the principles of reuse, requirements definition, decomposition, traceability, verification and validation.
  • Delivering system designs, interfaces and integration strategies that are robust, scalable and aligned to project and operational needs.
  • Providing technical leadership across the engineering lifecycle - guiding engineers, assuring deliverables and shaping safe, secure and compliant solutions.
  • Applying the right standards, processes and governance to maintain engineering quality, configuration control, and design assurance.
  • Collaborating closely with internal teams, suppliers, SMEs and customers to resolve issues, manage risks and deliver successful project outcomes.

Your success will be measured by

  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (Electrical, Electronic, Control, Systems, or similar), with Chartered Engineer status (or working toward it), and excellent communication, problem‑solving and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proven experience delivering complex control and monitoring systems across domains such as Power SCADA, Station Information/M&E supervisory systems, Tunnel Ventilation Control, or Route‑Wide Engineering Management Systems.
  • Strong technical competency in industrial control platforms, including hands‑on experience with A8000 RTUs, Siemens S7 PLCs, TIA Portal, and the integration of PLC/RTU‑based systems with field devices and networks.
  • Practical expertise with modern SCADA platforms, ideally WinCC OA, covering data modelling, architecture, system configuration, and multi‑system interface design.
  • Robust systems engineering capability—requirements capture and decomposition, architecture definition, interface control, integration planning, and full V‑lifecycle verification & validation.
  • Demonstrable technical leadership at a senior/CRE‑equivalent level, providing design assurance, making engineering decisions, managing change and configuration, and delivering solutions in safety‑critical or mission‑critical environments.
  • Experience developing novel or first‑of‑type solutions, applying sound engineering judgement, risk management, and adherence to standards, processes and engineering governance.

You’ll benefit from

  • Flexible working, 24/7 Mental health support, Subsidised gym memberships, Subsidised Bupa healthcare, Enhanced sick pay.
  • Match and More pension, Life assurance, Perks at Work discounts, Cycle to Work scheme, Annual Bonus.
  • Day-one maternity and paternity rights, shared parental leave, extra holidays for length of service, generous time off - including volunteering days and sabbaticals.
  • Access to online learning, Support for external training and development opportunities, Inclusive culture promoting equality and belonging, Active employee networks, Opportunities to grow your skills and career.
