Position

Senior Embedded C Software Engineer

At Siemens Healthineers, we pioneer breakthroughs in healthcare.

We are looking for a Senior Embedded C Software Engineer to develop intelligent firmware for advanced medical technology, supporting clinical decision‑making and improving patient experiences worldwide.

About the Role

You will join a multidisciplinary engineering team developing embedded software for microcontroller‑based systems used in magnet technology.

Your software will run directly on the system, monitoring performance, interacting with sensors, managing control functions, logging data, and ensuring safe, reliable operation.

This hands‑on role covers the full software lifecycle: understanding requirements, shaping designs, coding, debugging, testing, and release.

The role is offered on a hybrid basis, with regular on‑site work to collaborate with hardware, systems, and test colleagues.

  • What You'll Be Doing
  • Designing, developing, and maintaining embedded software in C for ARM‑based microcontroller platforms.
  • Building reliable firmware for real‑time environments, including RTOS‑based applications.
  • Translating requirements into clear, structured software designs, implementation plans and testable outputs.
  • Developing low‑level drivers, peripheral interfaces, and hardware‑facing software components.
  • Integrating software with hardware subsystems such as sensors, communication interfaces and control electronics.
  • Debugging and resolving software and hardware integration issues using tools such as JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analysers and related techniques.
  • Creating and supporting unit, integration and system‑level testing to ensure robust software performance.
  • Producing clear technical documentation and supporting structured development, release and configuration‑control processes.
  • Contributing to code reviews, continuous improvement, software quality practices and shared engineering standards.
  • Collaborating with electronics, systems, verification, manufacturing, service and product teams to deliver maintainable solutions.

Skills and Experience That Will Help You

  • Strong experience developing embedded software or firmware in C.
  • Practical experience with ARM‑based microcontrollers, ideally Cortex‑M platforms.
  • Good working knowledge of real‑time systems and RTOS concepts.
  • Experience with interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, CAN or USB.
  • Confidence debugging embedded systems and solving technical problems in a structured way.
  • Experience using version control tools such as Git or Azure Dev Ops.
  • Ability to work closely with electronics and hardware teams, including reading schematics or board bring‑up support.
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain technical topics and contribute constructively in design reviews and discussions.
  • Desired experience: bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms, secure update processes.
  • Experience with safety or regulatory frameworks such as MISRA C, IEC 62304, IEC 61508, ISO 26262, DO‑178C.
  • Experience with static analysis, unit test frameworks, automated testing or hardware‑in‑the‑loop testing.
  • Knowledge of Python or scripting tools for test automation or build support.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for embedded software.
  • Familiarity with communication stacks, diagnostics or fieldbus protocols.

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary
  • 26 days annual leave (with option to buy up to 10 days and sell up to 5 days)
  • Up to 10% matched pension contributions
  • BUPA Private Medical Cover
  • Bonus & Share Save Scheme
  • Use of on‑site gym
  • Two paid volunteering days a year
  • Hybrid working with meaningful on‑site collaboration
  • Opportunity to work on clinically relevant products with clear purpose in healthcare
  • Supportive environment for technical growth and contribution to standards, quality and continuous improvement
  • Equal Opportunities
