We’re currently seeking a new Head of Operations for our manufacturing business in Sudbury, a global leader in the manufacture and assembly of specialist instrumentation for laboratories and hospitals across the world for Urinalysis, Diabetes, and Blood Gas analytics.
In this role, you’ll lead, motivate and develop a large team (150+) to deliver the Bloodgas, Urinalysis and Diabetes product portfolios in line with customer requirements, ensuring the highest standards of quality, cost efficiency, and operational performance.
You’ll play a crucial role in supporting all manufacturing areas within supply chain management, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, and driving world‑class manufacturing standards.
With a strong focus on process optimisation and waste reduction, you’ll be instrumental in maximising profitability and achieving strategic business objectives. Responsibilities- Collaborate with the rest of the Senior Leadership Team to shape strategic plans, identify business opportunities, and develop innovative strategies for long‑term success, ensuring alignment with the Operations team.
- Build a high‑performance culture by promoting ownership, accountability, and adherence to safety (EHS) and operational excellence, ensuring the team’s objectives align with overarching strategic themes.
- Ensure workforce planning meets customer demands by optimising labour resource capacity and implementing robust training programmes to support current and future production needs.
- Evolve the manufacturing facility in line with long‑term strategies and new product requirements, maintaining flexibility and adaptability in operations.
- Champion a world‑class Quality culture by upholding stringent quality standards, resolving manufacturing challenges, and embedding a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring compliance with the FDA, ISO and IVDR standards.
- Drive a Lean culture, incorporating continuous improvement, and lead initiatives to introduce manufacturing best practice, and then ensure the adoption and application of such practices.
- Develop, maintain and utilise scorecards and KPIs to monitor performance, support decision making and drive improvement across all operational areas.
- Take overall responsibility for the recruitment, selection and development of direct reports (and their reports) delivering credible and realistic succession plans.
- Proven experience in a manufacturing leadership role overseeing large teams.
- Structured thinking – you’ll make informed decisions from analysis of complex information, drawing valid conclusions. Leading and coaching others in constructive debate.
- Advanced expertise in Lean principles, Statistical Process Control (SPC), 8D problem‑solving, and Value Stream Mapping (VSM), with the ability to implement and facilitate these tools effectively.
- Skilled in using standard business and manufacturing software, such as ERP systems (e.g. SAP), project management tools (e.g. MS Project), and workforce modelling platforms.
- Proficient in methodologies like Strategic Goal Alignment (Hoshin Kanri) and Agile Visual Management to enhance operational efficiency.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and products across multiple departments, with the ability to connect workflows to operational goals.
- Understanding of ISO 9001.
- Degree qualified, or equivalent experience in relevant Manufacturing, Operations, Business Management, Supply Chain Management subject.
