This role is an addition to the Product Services team within Grid Technologies Service, driven by business growth and the need to expand our site-based installation capabilities in the United Kingdom. To meet this demand, the Site Installation Engineer will focus on three core areas: on-site installation and commissioning of High Voltage (HV) equipment; performing scheduled and reactive maintenance; and ensuring strict adherence to all safety and documentation standards. These responsibilities are central to delivering projects safely and efficiently for our customers. Given the focus on hands-on technical delivery, the ideal candidate will possess proven experience in HV substation environments, supported by a relevant electrical apprenticeship or vocational qualification. Key competencies include technical proficiency with switchgear, an understanding of electrical schematics, and a strong commitment to health and safety protocols.

How You’ll Make An Impact

  • 50% On-Site Installation & Commissioning
    • Supervise and carry out the installation of High Voltage (HV) switchgear and related equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
    • Perform on-site commissioning of AIS Circuit Breakers (132-400kv), including function tests, timing tests, and CT analysis.
    • Interpret electrical schematic diagrams to ensure correct wiring, installation, and modification of systems.
    • Collaborate with project managers, providing updates on progress and reporting any technical challenges or delays.
  • 30% Maintenance & Technical Support
    • Execute planned and reactive maintenance activities on HV switchgear and transformers to ensure operational reliability.
    • Diagnose and troubleshoot technical faults on primary plant equipment in a substation environment.
    • Assist other field service teams (e.g., Transformers, GIS) as required to support broader operational objectives.
  • 20% Health, Safety & Documentation
    • Adhere to all company and legislative health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies to maintain a safe working environment.
    • Develop and produce Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for all assigned work activities.
    • Hold site safety documents or permits for work as required, ensuring full compliance with site-specific safety rules.
    • Complete detailed site work reports and document test results accurately for project records.

What You Bring

  • HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or a time-served Apprenticeship with NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant electrical discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience working on High Voltage (HV) substations, specifically with installation, commissioning, and maintenance activities.
  • A valid UK driving license is essential for this site-based role.
  • Additional Certificates, including CCNSG Safety Passport, National Grid Person / BESC, SF6 Gas Handling, First Aid at Work and Manual Handling.
  • Experience in HV switchgear installation and electrical commissioning.
  • Ability to interpret schematic diagrams and perform mechanical fitting.
  • Experienced in operating test equipment (e.g., Omicron, Megger) and handling SF6 gas.
  • Knowledge of site safety procedures, risk assessment (RAMS), and permit to work systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and technical reporting capabilities.
