Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a team of junior and experienced engineers to deliver primary engineering designs aligned with business strategy and internal processes.
- Take technical accountability for primary substation designs, including approval and sign-off of engineering deliverables.
- Ensure high-quality, consistent design outputs by chairing design reviews and coordinating closely with other principal engineers.
- Act as a key interface with clients, project management, civil teams, and other stakeholders to meet agreed timescales and budgets.
- Monitor engineering progress with the planner, proactively escalating risks or issues when required.
- Ensure all design risk assessments and HAZIDs are completed, with residual risks transferred to the Health & Safety file.
- Manage scope changes, engineering hours, and approvals in collaboration with project management throughout the project lifecycle.
- Produce detailed monthly engineering reports covering progress, risks, resourcing, and key highlights.
- Foster a positive, high-performing team culture by setting clear goals, coaching engineers, and supporting professional development.
Qualifications
- A degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Extensive experience in primary engineering design within the electricity transmission and distribution industry, including proven experience in the UK as a lead design engineer approving deliverables.
- Strong knowledge of grid connection requirements, constraints, technologies, and client approval processes (including type registration).
- In-depth understanding of transmission and distribution standards, HV substation design, and Health & Safety regulations, including CDM.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills, with a collaborative and customer-focused mindset.
- Proven ability to manage time, resources, budgets, and engineering programmes effectively.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- National Grid TP137 experience (desirable).
