To support this ambition, we are seeking an Environmental Designer to join our Climate & Sustainability team. The role will contribute to the delivery of sustainability consultancy services, supporting the growth of our strategic sustainability offering across a range of projects.
We are looking for someone who demonstrates engagement with contemporary challenges in the built environment, sustainability, and environmental design, and who is motivated to contribute to meaningful change. The successful candidate will be proactive in keeping up to date with relevant regulations, standards, industry guidance, and technical developments. They will be collaborative in their approach, working with internal and external project teams to develop appropriate design solutions. The role requires a professional and rigorous approach to work, alongside a willingness to support colleagues through knowledge sharing and teamwork.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
The Environmental Design Engineer will consider whole life carbon in decision-making, including both operational energy and embodied carbon impacts. The role requires an understanding of sustainability and environmental design issues relevant to the built environment, across a range of project scales. You will support the Climate & Sustainability team in delivering projects, which may include policy assessments, climate resilience studies, and decarbonisation strategies. You will be working towards professional membership or chartership and will actively pursue continued professional development relevant to both personal objectives and the wider objectives of the business.
Technical Tasks
- Undertake environmental analysis including energy performance analysis, MEP systems simulation, compliance analysis against UK and international energy codes, daylight, sun/shade, glare, external microclimate, and CFD.
- Simulate heating and cooling loads to support mechanical system design.
- Assess design compliance with UK regulations and standard methodologies, including associated report writing (e.g. Part L/O, BB101, TM52, TM54, TM59, TM65).
- Support the development of bespoke analysis methodologies to meet project requirements, using existing software workflows or contributing to the development of new tools.
- Contribute to the delivery of Net Zero Carbon outcomes, including zero-carbon roadmaps, decarbonisation strategies, policy development, and project design.
- Carry out embodied carbon life cycle assessments for whole buildings and MEP systems.
Skills and Qualifications
- A relevant degree in engineering, architecture, or a related science discipline, with experience in the built environment.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in environmental design and sustainability within the built environment.
- Knowledge and experience of dynamic modelling for compliance and operational energy analysis.
- Experience using energy modelling software such as IES, EnergyPlus, TAS, PHPP, SAP/HEM.
- Familiarity with environmental design tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper (Ladybug, Honeybee), Radiance, THERM, and/or scripting tools such as Python (desirable, not essential).
- Awareness of HVAC modelling; experience contributing to NABERS projects and an understanding of Passivhaus principles are advantageous.
- Developing relationship-building and client communication skills.
- Experience producing clear, high-quality technical reports.
- Strong attention to detail and a good standard of written English.
