Shropshire Council is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Trading Standards and Parking Enforcement team as a Trading Standards apprentice. This is an exciting career opportunity to learn what it takes to be a Trading Standards Officer whilst undertaking a professional apprenticeship aimed at creating a clear pathway into the profession. The post holder will undertake the Level 6 Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship (equivalent to degree level).

The post holder will be required to participate in a range of compliance and targeted related intervention work, undertake enforcement enquiries and investigations into breaches of a wide range of regulatory and consumer protection legislation and activities including tackling rogue traders, enforcing the provisions for age restricted products, the new tobacco and vapes legislation and the safety of consumer products. You will be supported through a structured training programme with a talented and experienced team around you, which will help you to obtain a professional qualification and a career path into the world of Trading Standards. Responsibilities

  • Undertake compliance and targeted intervention work and enforcement enquiries and investigations into breaches of regulatory and consumer protection legislation.
  • Tackle rogue traders and enforce provisions for age restricted products, tobacco and vaping legislation, and the safety of consumer products.
  • Contribute to a range of operational objectives and team plans within the Trading Standards and Parking Enforcement team.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Enrolment on and completion of the Level 6 Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship (equivalent to degree level).
  • A good standard of general education and the aptitude and commitment towards studying; ability to understand and interpret complex legislation.
  • Higher level qualifications are welcome but not essential; consideration given to diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • First-class communication and customer service skills, high attention to detail, and strong organisational abilities.
  • Perseverance, patience, situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm in difficult circumstances.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to contribute to a wide range of objectives.
  • Full driving licence is essential due to travel requirements (within and out of county).
