Position Summary
The Towns of Shrewsbury, Grafton, and West Boylston are seeking a dedicated Environmental Health Inspector to join our Regional Public Health Alliance. Under the leadership of the Regional Public Health Director, you\’ll play a key role in protecting and promoting public health through inspections, investigations, and education. This hands-on position involves ensuring compliance with environmental and public health regulations related to food safety, housing, septic systems, pools, camps, and more. Candidates with a background in environmental or public health, knowledge of Massachusetts sanitary codes, and a passion for community well-being are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct inspections of food establishments, housing, septic systems, pools, camps, and other regulated sites
- Investigate environmental and public health complaints and hazards
- Support communicable disease case follow-up and foodborne illness investigations
- Review and process permits for regulated activities
- Prepare inspection reports, enforcement notices, and legal documentation
- Educate property owners, businesses, and the public on health codes and best practices
- Assist with emergency response efforts and public health outreach programs
- Stay current on changes to state and federal health regulations and codes
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, or a related field
- 1–3 years of experience in environmental health or regulatory inspections
- Knowledge of Massachusetts sanitary codes and public health laws
- Skilled in conducting inspections, interpreting codes, and documenting findings
- Excellent communication, customer service, and conflict resolution skills
- Organized, tech-savvy, and capable of managing multiple tasks independently
- Certified or eligible to become a Massachusetts Registered Sanitarian within two years
- Valid MA driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Willingness to travel regionally and adapt quickly in emergencies
