Shorterm Group is representing a leading manufacturing organisation based in Portsmouth that is seeking an experienced Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) and Compliance Manager to take ownership of safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance across the site. This is a pivotal role for an individual who can combine hands-on operational involvement with strategic leadership, ensuring legal compliance while driving a strong, positive safety and quality culture.
Role Overview
The EHS & Compliance Manager will develop, implement, and monitor policies and systems to ensure workplace safety, environmental compliance, and adherence to applicable legal and regulatory standards. Reporting to senior management, the role also acts as a key liaison with external regulatory bodies and supports certification and auditing activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
- Ensure compliance with all environmental, health, and safety legislation and regulations
- Develop, implement, and maintain EHS management systems
- Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards
- Lead accident and near-miss investigations, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions
- Deliver site-wide safety training and promote a proactive safety culture
- Manage emergency response planning, including fire safety and evacuation procedures
- Advise on environmental sustainability, waste management, and energy efficiency initiatives
- Manage EHS data, KPIs, and performance reporting to management and regulatory bodies
- Develop, review, and implement company policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements
- Support the Quality Manager with internal audits, inspections, and ongoing monitoring
- Identify, assess, record, and mitigate compliance risks
- Act as the main point of contact for regulatory authorities and external auditors
- Deliver compliance and ethical standards training across the organisation
- Maintain and promote compliance with: ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 (Certification achievement), ISO 45001:2018 (Certification achievement)
- Support the development of QMS processes and procedures toward AS9100 compliance
Skills & Experience Required:
- Proven experience in an EHS and/or Compliance management role within a manufacturing or engineering environment
- Strong knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental legislation
- Experience conducting audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations
- Confident communicator, able to present complex regulatory information at all levels
- Strong Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Commitment to high standards of housekeeping and 5S
- Ability to foster a positive, inclusive, and engaged workplace culture
Qualifications
- NEBOSH qualification preferred (or demonstrable equivalent experience)
- Experience working with ISO management systems is highly desirable
